Are you checking red (actually orange-ish) lentils or green/brown lentils?
Basically you need to check for tiny pebbles, or black spots (easy to find in red lentils). Red lentils are usually split in half, may have white tiny thingie that is either roots or sprouts. Brown/green lentils are a bit harder, but you're looking for the same thing, foreign objects and an individual piece that looks eaten by a bug.

Yellow small lentils.
Looks pretty clean. Do I need to check for holes? One by one or pass thru to see what's between them? Thanks tons!!!

No, what you're looking for is not a teeny-weeny hole but something that looks black/brown-ish.
I find orange/yellow ones much easier to check.

| Some people hold that you just fill the pot with water, and remove the lentils that float to the top.

I don't know where you're located so what I'm saying is what R' Vaye says for Israel
for green lentils- strain and check the powder that falls through
2 dissolve 10 t of salt in 5c warm water.
3 pour in lentils mix immediately w/ your hand
4 throw away any lentils that float to the top
the rest you can eat (it's pref to grind though)
its diff for the red. I'll try to write it up later
