I'd be incredibly insulted if people did that with my MM. Here I am, trying to do a mitzvah, and trying to create something that others will enjoy, and someone is waiting and the door, rubbing hands with delight -- oh, wonderful. I can take it apart, repackage, and foist it off on someone else as my own mitzvah.

I also get upset about this. Last year, I was at someone's house.I brought an extra one for their dil who was visiting and they gave me one from their pile. It had homemade food. I just tossed the baked goods out as I had no idea, whose kitchen it came from. I was highly insulted.

I make 30 themed ones. I also make about five for each kid which are a smaller variation on my theme and I make about fourgrand master pieces for my very closest friends.

I dont recycle home baked/cooked goods.
and I dont do it in front of the person.

I keep what I want to, and mix the rest.

and I end up giving away stuff after purim.

it is rather unfortunate that people feel hurt, but I need to worry about not going in debt for mm, and not giving myself the extra nisayon of eating unhealthily by keeping the stuff.

Oops, I forgot to add another 9 kiddie MM or so for dd to give out.
Glad I prepared a list last year. Found lots of reminders on there like we need mini Megillahs to take to Shul, and that the first Megillah reading takes an hour long, while the rest take 30 minutes. (You know which one we'll be going to this year Smile )

Why would anyone go into debt sending mishloach manot. Two mishloach manot, 2 foods. You can do it for a couple of dollars -- 2 apples, 2 pieces of chocolate, 2 paper bags. Done.

I expect that people will share what they receive with others, particularly if they don't like or can't use it. But the thought that people are taking what they receive, then giving it to others as if its something that they bought for that person, to fulfill their own mitzvah, it just rubs me very much the wrong way.

I prepare about 15 adult ones plus 2-3 kiddie ones per child. Plus rebbe/teacher ones, that will be 7 of those this year.

I havent explained myself clearly.

I prepare the first amount, say two or six or how much I can afford.
for the rest, I do the mix and match.

if I would have to send mishloach manot now, yes , I would have to go into debt for it. hard to believe, but this is the situation now. I am hoping itll change quickly for the better.

I usually make a soup and some rolls. When I have been pressed for time in the past I've substituted soup nuts. Everyone appreciates it, and it doesn't cost much at all. I've also done rolls and dips or veggies.

I make about 10 I would say, but I always have plenty more to make more if we get more people come by. People have toned down MM in our neighborhood. A lot of people give through the tzeduka list and only to a few close friend. Everyone knows so no one is insulted.

I allow the kids to make bunches because it's their fun to enjoy giving to their friends. I buy some candy and either make or bake hamantashin (or pull the ones that come out of the community MM that we never eat!!). I'd say the kids make at least 10 each, but I don't really "count" those. As they get older if they want to give out a few nicer ones to good friends that would be fine also. Now they just give a little baggie with a lollypop and a hamantashin or something similar.

If I get anything homemade, from someone I know well, its like a treasure, I would never give it away.
Homemade stuff is rare these days, every year its less and less.
If I need to recycle for an unexpected extra, I will give away one of those premade professional ones that are a shame to unwrap, and that I get too many of and don't need. If I am left with any of them, I find someone to give them to the next day or during the week after.
I usually prepare enough, but somehow every year there is always someone that shows up unexpected, and I don't want them to walk out empty handed. What's the difference whose chocolate or wafers or wine bottles they get? We are all left with a lot more stuff than we need or want.
My children make a few of their own, for friends, neighbors and teachers.
No matter how many I make in advance, and its usually at least 25-30 (after all the possible cutting down) I always end up making a few more on the day of Purim itself. I buy extra of the things I am using, and put together as I need them. It becomes boring every year, because I usually end up doing the same year after year, and so do most of my friends and neighbors. Everyone has their "style" and they usually stick to it.

Get rid of it any way I can, send it with the kids to school, give it to someone that goes around to hospitals or find someone that wants/needs it. Some things just go to the garbage.

so I dont see whats the problem with buying less and recycling. as long as you dont do the mix and match in front of people.

and you say it gets boring. of course it does. why not try for a change this year? (you can even send me the money you save Wink )

Kids are the best at accepting recycled MMs. Last year at the end of the day, a kid brought one of mine a personal MM. I was all out of prepared MMs. I brought the kid over to the table, and asked him to choose the items he liked for me to make a MM for him. He was ecstatic!

If kids deliver to you, you can do the same - ask them what their family would like from the offerings and assemble on the spot. But you have to have the items out, not still in the baskets from those who delivered to you.

About 10-20 I would say, could be a bit more this year.
I actually prefer the bought and not self-baked stuff unless I know the giver's kitchen.

I usually have a few left over Smile but my mm is nt usually junk, its stuff that I would normally allow my kids to eat anyway, so then I dont feel so bad sending it for snack over the next few weeks

I make the least MM's that I could get away with - for the rebbis/teachers, 2 of my neighbors who help me out alot, a lonely old woman who lives near me (and doesnt get from anyone else), and 1-2 more. That's it. We made up with family and friends not to give each other.

I hope so too.

But here's my feeling. Let's say you had a kid a bit younger than mine, and said you wanted hand-me-downs from me. I gave you all that stuff. Then I find out that you actually sold everything on ebay to make money. I'd be angry and insulted. OTOH, if you sorted through the stuff, your kid didn't like a couple of shirts so you passed them on, I'd be OK with it.

The first is calculated using of others. I'm going to take what others have given to me and use it to benefit myself (whether by selling for money, or giving out my food as if you had purchased it for MM). The second (I have too much, please take) is sharing.

barbara, in life, I am the sort that takes what I can use and only then give to others.

but mishloach manos, I am going to give away either after purim, because it is too much for my family, or buy less and give away as purim goes along. and I see no reason to spend more, just for the benefit of getting everyone something that I personally bought for mishloach manos. what for?
