Zohar.
It's an Israeli name, for a boy or a girl (unisex). It means light, but more "brightness", "radiance". pronounced zoh-hahr. for a girl, you could have Zahara - but Zohar is fine for a girl as well.
Lior.
it means my light. for a girl, you could have Liora, but Lior is also common for a girl, and for a boy. it's a unisex name as well.

hi,
Sorry about your grandmother! I am happy for you that you are looking forward to a simcha! and a future generation for you grandmother!
Zahava is gold - but I love the name.
Zeva (or Ziva) was mentioned. It is a ray of light. Also beautiful name.
Meira sounds nice too. I like names that are not very common but not weird or just words.
Ner-ya (whatever the spelling) is a Tanach name and is definately used.
Svetlana or any part of it is a russian name. You have to decide if your daughter (if it is a girl) will be happy going around, (I'm aassuming you dont live in Russia) with a russian name, or be ashamed of her name? Maybe only as a second name.

I thought of Barak from Shirat Devorah, she apparently sang with Barak be Avinoam. (Whoever that was)
And her husband's name was Lapidot, which is a more different name, I guess. But it means flames. |
many say barak was her husband.... he is the same person as lapidot
don'y member why he was called barak there but I belive it has something to do with his warior skills....

I think Zahava is a bit of a strech, but it is a very pretty name.
Lana is great as so is Lena. I know a Svetlana who is called Lana by every1
boy: barak - means lightning
shine
sheen
luster
gloss
gleam
bolt
glare
brightness
glitter
glossiness
barak was also the husband of Devorah the judge (mentioned in sefer Shoftim)
good luck & besha tova!

I like Zeva and Meira.
I don't think I would use the entire name, Svetlana, if it's a girl. It does just scream "Russian!!" and she'd be growing up in America, so it might be weird. I do think using the ending - Lana - would be pretty. My grandmother used to just go by the first part, Sveta. If it's a girl I am definitely leaning close to Lana Meira!
Barak would definitlely not work, considering it's our President's first name! And we are not staunch Democrats or liberals, by any stretch. lol.
I also am not crazy about Meir, as I've said... no good reason, just not a huge fan (though add that "a" at the end and we're in business!). Same goes for the Uri's/Ora's. Don't love Leora either, and it's the name of a close friend's dd. I like Zohar, but since I'm not Sefardi nor a new age hippie, I probably can't pull it off...
Can't wait to find it the gender, if will make this decision 50% easier, I hope!
Thanks, everyone, for all your great ideas!

Zeva sounds like you had a Zev to name for and just feminized it.Ziv/Ziva means brightness but be careful to spell it properly. Ziva with a 'Bet' is a gonorrhea. And yes, they're pronounced the same. _________________

(Variant spelling of Hebrew Neriya, meaning "light of the Lord." In the bible, this is the name of the father of Baruch.)
! | Nerya was the father of Baruch the scribe. I have a Nerya and his middle name is Meir. He was full of "light" when he was born. So we have Ner (light, candle) of Hashem and Meir (gives light).

| medola wrote: | I see like 3 people suggested Meir, but I have a good friend who has one of her sons named Shmuel Meyer and now I forever associate that name with him... Sometimes they call him just Shmuel or just Meyer. Pretty sure that's how they spell it, though it might be indeed "Meir".
Don't you just hate it how the names of your friends' rambunctious children, or the name of some weird kid you knew back in middle school, can just ruin a perfectly good name for you, forever?
Either way, I just don't love the sound of the name Meir.
But Meira, on the other hand, has a nice ring to it, for me. Weird, eh? |
You can choose to associate him with Chofetz Chaim - Yisroel Meir.
Seriously, Meir is such a common name that it doesn't have to be that boy.
