Dh saw a recipe he wanted. I hate brussel sprouts so have never made them. Do you do just like cabbage, and peel the outer layers, quarter it and check the quarters? Is there a way to keep it whole?

Unfortunately, I have this feeling that a bunch of people are going to write back and say that they're assur to eat.

I don't think they are assur to eat if you take them apart and check them. My mother does that! She gets an organic box of fruit and veg every week and if they send brussles sprouts she takes them apart, checks them, and then cooks them.

I LOVE brussel sprouts, and havent had any in ages, since I realized it would be impossible to check them adequately

If anyone out there has suggestions otherwise, please let me know!!

I always thought they were very very cute...I used to pretend to be a giant, biting bad people's heads (I stopped doing that by college...) now I wish I knew how to check them, if poss, because I miss them.

DH is in kashrus (major agency) and says "not possible to check" brussel sprouts, however cauliflower isn't a problem. You just need to break up the head and soak it for a while, aggatate a bit, and check for any black bugs. The "flowers" of the cauliflower are too tight for bugs to live in and any infestation will be seen. Unfortunately the same can't be said for broccoli. Sad

I posted in another thread that I found them frozen with a "1K" hechsher at Trader Joes.

I called the CRC and they said that the "1K" is a reliable hechsher from Belgium.

This is their website. http://www.1kosher.org/Welcome.html

Otherwise you can google the OU/StarK/CRC's vegetable checking guides. I recall all of them saying that fresh is impossible to check, but frozen is ok if there's a reliable hashgacha. Bodek has them in little frozen bags but it's super expensive, IMO, esp compared to my Trader Joe's find - which seemed to give me even more for just $1.19!

They are delish cooked up with some olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, garlic cloves/powder - stove top, 10-15mins.

star- K says, "only when certified insect-free" which is not the same as having a regular hechsher.
