I've been using Playtex Sippy Cups for a while now.
I give my ds only water in it.
I wash it every few days or so...
recently I noticed an upsetting surprise.
the tip (nipple/spout) made of some sort of silicone maybe, had black guck in it.
is it mold? why is it there? do I need to wash it more often?
how do I get rid of it now? or should I just toss them?
I tried pouring boiling water in there and scrubbing with a q-tip. it got some of it out but nowhere near all of it.
is there some way to dissolve it and avoid it happening again???
uchhhh grossed out!

So gross. I think it is mold and I would throw it out unless you have a dishwasher or a friend/relative who could wash it for you in their dishwasher.

Sippy cups in general freak me out. I never feel like I can get them clean enough.

I had that happen once and I just threw it out because it never really got clean. But it hasn't happened again. I also use it for water only, and I rinse it in hot water every night and try to let it dry and air out over night. I guess if there is constant moisture it's more likely to mold.

PS Our Playtex sippy cup fell out of the stroller as we were loading it into the trunk of our car a few days ago. We didn't notice, and ran over it as we pulled out. The cup got bent, but I was really impressed that it didn't even crack! The cover popped off and wasn't damaged at all. Those cups are really sturdy.

Well, I didn't run it through the dishwasher, just tried using q-tips and toothpicks with various cleansers. Try the dishwasher before you toss it.

Try soaking it overnight in bleach, soap and hot water. that may help. In general, doing so every now and then can be a good idea.

I'd be nervous to soak s/t with bleach that has such close contact with his mouth. how do I know how completely it is really off?? (the bleach)

I got a special tiny brush to clean sippy straws and valves and spouts: it works better than a toothpick because it scrubs. It is hard to get them totally clean!
