Any I guess YOU are a hurricane expert. You know exactly when it is safe to go out during a hurricane. Plenty of trees fell down, bh most people were at home so they were not injured. I've never lived through a hurricane (and nor have most NY'ers) so I would have no idea when it is safe or not to go out.

Just as an FYI, many of the casualties from this storm were people who were killed inside their homes by fallen trees.

hmmm... I doubt that the boy was waiting for his school bus... the schools were closed...

he opened up the gate in front of his house (the gate was there to keep the kids safe, ironically) and the electric current passed thru

that area of monsey was barely affected at all by Hurricane Irene. it seemed like a regular thunderstorm. no downed trees in that part of town as far as I know.

many people went to shul in the AM

the father of the boy kicked the boy away from the electrified gate, but he was wearing rubber boots, and rubber doesnt trasmit electricity, so he was only slightly burned

however, the neighbor that tried to shove away the little boy was not wearing boots and he was electrocuted and passed onto a better world, where he will undoubtedly be given tremendous schar for endangering hs life (and ultimately losing it) because he cared. he was a very caring man.

the little boy is about 6 yrs old I think? and my little brother says he is very cute! may he have a Refuah Shleimah B'Karov and bring happiness to both families involved.

Disclaimer: I was B"H B"H not witness to what happened, and this is all hearsay, but from reliable sources who know the families. I cannot promise the accuracy of the information above, but I believe it is accurate.

by the way, 2 of the people included in the total number of deaths were on the beach, and one was surfing.

isnt that basically suicide?

lots of surfers went out because the waves were really big.

yes, they were idiots. I'm not a surfer but apparantly it is addictive.

Someone else drowned because she went out to watch the water rising.

I know some people got killed in their houses (not sure if it was most) but being outside was probably not safer.

Am I the only struck by how strange it is? 15 people killed in the entire East coast and 2 of them frum Jews?

maybe becasue frum jews are less likely to be watching tv/listening to radio (especially since the storm was so soon after shabbos) and therefore may have not heard the warnings to evacuate/stay inside.

I don't know what happened with the little boy, but I found very upsetting some of the stories on frum newssites that were proud of how many people went to shul on sunday morning. And a similar attitude seen here on the mikva during hurricane thread. If people want to be irresponsible with their life, fine, just please don't make them out to be tzaddikim for doing so.

Do you live on the east coast? Was your DH in an evacuation zone? If the answer is no, then you lost your right to declare those who went to shul Sunday morning irresponsible.

Why is that? We are certainly able to judge actions based upon objective facts.

And for the record, our local shuls cancelled Sunday shacharit due to dangerous weather conditions.

Many of the "facts" were untrue. What dangerous weather conditions Sunday morning?

We were still experiencing heavy winds until mid-morning.

If you don't consider heavy winds in a rain-saturated environment to be dangerous, enjoy yourself outdoors during the next hurricane.

I did and I will. Thanks for the warm wishes!

Gold, I heard from someone who is best friends with the man who passed away-he told me that it was at 2 AM and the boy went out to watch the storm and he stepped on a live wire. His father was wearing rubber boots which saved him. Regardless of when it happened, it was all over the news, radio, etc that NO ONE should leave their houses until 9 PM Sunday evening because of the high winds and the risk of falling trees, power lines, etc.

I think its really sad about the two frum people. However, in regards to the Monsey story, what kind of parents let their kid go out at 2 AM during a hurricane?!!!! That man died trying to save the boy who was out at that time who had stepped on a live wire!

The main focus was on NYC (brooklyn, staten island). In Monsey and the mountains it was barely spoken about.

Life in Monsey on sunday morning was regular. The little boy was waiting for his school bus.

do you think next time there is a hurricane this kids school will stay open? I beleive some of the monsey schools were closed becasue of it, this one clearly chose not to.

Gosh, this story is getting more interesting and twisted by the minute. He was NOT waiting for his bus - he's a grade above my son in yeshiva and they have summer vacation now. THERE WAS NO SCHOOL. My kids were also out on Sunday - the sun was shining in the afternoon!

im not sure that the details matter at this point, but like I said, OodlesofNoodles, it was not 2 AM, and IYamwhoIYam, I dont think it was 2 PM either... Notice that YeshivaWorld / VosIzNeias was carrying the story by like 12:00 or so.... I heard about the situation by like 12:30, when Tehillim was being arranged.... but I'm sure it was an ongoing situation with Hatzola still needed at 2 PM and later....

not that it matters at this point.

I just want to be clear that nobody did anything wrong in this situation. tons of people were out at 11 o'clock AM, when the tragedy occurred. the area was not hit very hard by Irene, other than with this horrible event.
