Hi,
I am seriously considering going into the "Dental" field. I can not decide whether I want to study to be a Dental Assisant or a Dental Hygienist.

I know DA schooling is ALOT shorter but how much less does a Da earn than a DH? Which do you think is better?

Can you help me if you( or ur mother/daughter/sister /friend) work in either profession...

How long did it take you to find a job after graduating?
Are you happy with your hrs? ft or pt?
Where do you live?
How much do you earn, with how many years experience?
What is the current starting salary per hr for a new grad?
What kind of dental practise do you work in?
My Dh's Rav mentioned something about how Dental assisting is not an appropriate job for a frum woman becuase she has to work along side, in close proximity, with the DDS. Has anyone heard this before? I know that a lot of frum girls do dental assisting.

My dd is a dental assistant.

A DH will earn at least double the DA's salary. However - she may not find full time work with benefits. She might just get per diem work. It's a problem.

I don't think my thoughts have anything to do with the question.

She had any number of offers. We went on Craigs List and almost everyplace she sent her resume, wanted her.

She's very happy.

Brooklyn, but I assume people, the world over, have teeth and that NYC doesn't have a monopoly on needing dental assistants.

She has a few years' experience now. She earns as much as good secretary.

I think you should look in ads in your paper for your area.

She works with a surgeon now, but she used to work with a general dentist. She makes more working with a surgeon, of course. And if she wanted to, she could work with an orthodontist and make even more.

I'm the dietitian who was chatting with her dental hygienist (from one of the other career threads). My hygienist mentioned that she was in the process of moving to another state because of her husband's career, and was not sure if she would be able to find a job there. The market does seem to vary from one area to another. There are many market forces affecting hiring, including the overall economy, supply/demand, differing licensure and practice standards from state to state, and so on. So you're asking all the right questions. Maybe you could ask the assistants/hygienists at your own dentist's office?

About working alongside a dentist - there are many female dentists! Also, it is highly unlikely that you would be alone with the dentist. In both large and small offices, there are usually additional people around, plus the patients of course.

I wonder if it's possible to start as a DA, and move on to DH training once you get your feet wet?

This sounds like an exciting time for you, whichever path you choose. Good luck - and keep us all posted on your progress!

You have to be licensed in the state that you work. That's prob. what she mean.

My dd is a DA and is in school for DH. You don't have to do it that way, though.
