Old news.. and the article is ladden with stereotypes.

Quote:
The phenomenon of a man married to several women (polygamy) was common among the people of Israel in ancient times.

No, no, no. It was never "the norm".
Quote:

Sephardic men abandoned the tradition as well in the past centuries, settling for only one woman.

No, no, no. Some never did it, some abandoned it, some still did it when they made alia.
I also bet they have no idea Sefardi is a precise origin and not an umbrella word for "non Ashkenazic".

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef isn't following, as rabbanim here say, Chachme Sefarad. He is Iraki, which is a subcategory of Mizrachi. There is no reason everyone could go by him EVEN IF he agreed to polygamy.

I'm fed up of stereotypes, frankly.

Personally, I wish DH would take on a few more wives. He's not Sephardi, though, so I guess I'm out of luck.

Seriously, I've been pulling first and second shifts for over 25 years (with a total of 5 days' vacation since 2002), and I would love to have one wife stay home and take care of meals, laundry, carpools, etc. True, expenses would be higher, but we'd have more wives working, too!

Of course, the biggest downside was noted by a wit on VosIzNeias: "Oy vey! Two shviggers?"

It's funny because I know Rabbi Sofer personally, and he is a man of great mind, super smart, very religious, sharpminded, respectful etc... I really like him! It's very sursprising to me to hear such things on his name....

I always tell my dh it would be a great idea - then I could sit on the couch and eat bon bons and someone else would do dishes!
Personally I dont think men can handle more than one wife though!

Anyone see the famous play by Noel Coward (also a film), Blithe Spirit. Ok, one wife was dead and the other alive, but I will never forget the last scene when they're all in Heaven and he's got one wife on each arm and they're all bickering!

And what about the law?

"The State laws forbid it, but from a rabbinical perspective – if the woman agrees and you are able to provide for another home – it's permissible.

Aren’t you afraid of promoting a legal offense?

"If you follow the State's law – fine, but you should know that the Torah law allows it."

Can the process be done secretly?

"Of course."

Torah also says you must follow the law of the land so long as it doesn't go against Torah.
Not allowing more then one wife doesn't force you to break any halachos so I don't see this law as going against Torah.
Even if you do not follow the Ashkenazi takana no where does it say in Torah that you MUST have more then one wife.

That this might be a total fabrication didn't cross your mind? All stories about frum Jews in the leftist Israeli media are either misquoting Rabbanim and stam frum Jews, or outright fabrications to begin with.

If you know Rabbi Sofer personally, and know him to be a man of great mind, super smart, sharpminded, respectful etc, why would you believe for even one moment that he would say such non-sense?!

Why don't you call him up and ask him what this is all about?

Yes, but what if the second wife was planning to sit around eating bon bons while someone else did the dishes? Wink

Even for the avos and imaos it wasn't ideally working...

Most men who took a second wife, historically, had a sterile first wife in times and places divorce was worse.

Even in countries where most locals had or wanted 2+ wives, the Jews were often known as "the people with one wife".
