| What name could I use instead of Esther? The obvious (Hadassa) is not an option.

Hodes (Hudes), Hodesa (Hudesa), Hodel (Hudel) and Hodya (Hudya) were all once popular variants of Hadassa...
And then you have Saleva and Salva (don't ask me why), Stera (spelled like "Stira" as in "contradiction") etc.

since hadassah is esther
the meaning of hadassah is a flower or rose
so you can go that route of using a name having to do with a flower

what's the problem with Esther?

Are you looking for a feminine Purim-themed name other than Esther or Hadassah?
If that's what you're thinking, how about
Nisa, Nesya (miracle)
Yaira (feminine of Mordechai's father's name)
Shoshana (as in Shoshanas Yaakov)
Matana
I'm sure other people can come up with some other options along this line, again assuming that this is what you're thinking of.

Op here. We can't use Esther because its my grandmother's name but my dh's grandmother passed away and it was also her name. Hadassa is a siblings name so I don't want to use that. Its not Purim related so I don't want to go that route.
Thanks everyone for all your suggestions! Any other ideas?

| would you go for the name Estreya?. It means star. I've heard of a few of those and some are called Esther-although not at all related in root.

my dh grandmothers name is esther and we named our baby Esther Rachel after my great grandmother. We are sephardi so it isn't a problem, and I also have a sibling hadassa, and my dh grandmother was over the moon that the baby is names after her, even though she wasn't. We just liked the name and had very happy grandparents on both sides...

Hi, I feel so connected to this question. I'll tell you my little story: my grandmother's name was Matov, and I really wanted to name my daughter after her since she passed. But as our rav said that Matov is not a Jewish name, Matov translates 'moon light' from Tadjik's (Middle Asia) language, so he suggested several names- Esther, Elinor, Elisheva, Mazal, Tova, and Im Shalom. Since Matov means moon light, we chose Elinor which means 'Hashem is my light' light light same. I spelled Elinor with I because I did not want it to be the English Eleanor. I don't know if this helps you, but I thought it would be cute to share the story. _________________ Great things come in small packages.

Did dh's granmother have a middle name?
A friend was once in the same situation and her rav told her to give the child the grandmother's full name (Esther Leah) but to use the middle name, Leah, in everyday life.
