I have never quite gotten it right... I would love to know what works for others. I dont want unnecessary heat in the house competing with the AC, but I do want hot (or at least very warm) food for yom tov!

It's gonna be hot! I usually have both the oven and one burner on, but I have gotten away with just the oven.

Some things I'm going to heat up on the burner. Others I'll warm up on a hot plate - things like kugel etc.

If you havew a gas stove - invest in a Hagaz - a gas timer that can be changed and used on Chag. then you can cook just for the time you want to without leaving the gas on all chag.

I am not being home for the first two meals, so I will get a neighbor (israeli) to come turn on my stove and oven.

we put a cookie sheet w/ tea lights on the bottom of the oven and the oven will be at 35O for about 3 hours. Every oven varies and in some ovens the tea lights won't stay on. CAUTION! PEOPLE HAD FIRES FROM THIS! USE CAUTION!

abmom, I know you posted a warning, but please do not do this even for yourself.
There have been horrible explosions, with terrifying results.

Don't use caution!!! Just don't do it!!! There's no way to 'use caution' when doing something dangerous.

I leave on one (gas) burner. I use my blech and an upside down jelly roll pan (aka cookie sheet- I use disposable) to heat the food. The pan insulated so the bottom of the kugel/ chicken, etc. don't get burned. When I am not using it I try to keep it as low as possible.

I don't understand what this is? Are you using the oven or tea lights? If the oven is on 350 then why do you need the tea lights? so confused!

I leave 2 ovens on and a burner I usually cook most of my food on Tom tov so don't have a choice.

Oven primarily, sometimes a stovetop. But it's the beginning of (mild) winter here (or end of autumn depending upon the year) so it's actually quite nice to have the place warmed a bit. When we were in NY we sweltered, we sat around with frozen Tabatchnik (sp?) trying to cool off inside and went for a walk outside (a really hot day but it was cooler out than in!)
