Some women either still get their period while pregnant (of course it's actually bleeding not a real period, but they can't tell the difference) or were on a type of birth control that means fewer/no periods so weren't expecting one, or never had regular periods to begin with.
Some started out overweight so don't look pregnant or simply don't gain much weight and carry very small.
Depending on where the placenta is, how much body fat the mother has, and whether or not she knows what kicking feels like (if it's faint, a person who isn't expecting it could mistake it for gas or the like), it's normal not to feel/recognize kicking.
It's unusual but not abnormal to have no major symptoms like morning sickness or exhaustion. In addition, someone who isn't expecting to be pregnant (because she was using birth control) might not connect a week or two of nausea and tiredness, or a few months of headaches, to having had s-x several weeks earlier. She might just think she's sick.
It's rare to get all those things together, but it can happen.

I actually heard a similar story once. The woman was very overweight to begin with, and had very irregular periods. She did not gain that much weight, and because she was so over-weight, she couldn't feel the baby kick.
One day she had these terrible stomach pains, and ended up in the emergency room.
Imagine her surprise when she was told - well, lady, sure you have stomach pains - you're in labor! _________________ That's the way the cookie crumbles...

I can see it happening. I lost weight while pregnant (and I'm not overweight to begin with) and still fit in my regular clothing the entire time (except for the stuff that got too BIG on me, no haters please).
I was barely showing (people thought I was in my 5th month at the end of my 9th.
If I hadn't weighed myself because I was pregnant (I dont weight myself otherwise) I would have thought I had just gained weight (ok, here I may be lying a bit).
The thing I really couldnt ignore though was the elbows, knees, hands, and feet that kept protruding from my sides.
who knows.

I cant understand it either. When the baby is twisting and turning at the end and there are elbows and things actually poking out of you... How can you mistake that for gas?? _________________

| I know someone who didn't find out she was pregnant with her 4th baby until she was 6 months pregnant! She was a little heavy to begin with so she either didn't gain weight or didn't notice the weight gain, she always had extremely irregular periods so that didn't concern her, and during the time she was nauseous and feeling icky, they were out of the country traveling and they were eating out a lot and eating greasy, oily food that always made her feel nauseous anyways so she attributed it to that.

lol but it shouldn't! ive watched the show "I didn't even know I was pregnant" and many of the babies born to moms who didn't know they were pregnant need to be in the ICU or at greater risk of problems.

Except the baby takes it all out of us, and we turn into old women.

Well, I could almost see this happening to me. Especially if on bc. Almost, but probably not all the way through. The last time I got preg I didn't know till I was about to enter the fourth month - and then only found out because dh decided to have me test, though I laughed at him for being ridiculous. Every one of the pregnancy symptoms I had is normal and typical for me in general, so I didn't think to put them all together and find one root cause, and I usually don't really show until I'm in or almost in my ninth month, so I could see not knowing until then, but once I hit month nine I definitely would have realized if I hadn't by then. I could see mistaking early kicks for tummy issues, which I have plenty of, but I think by the time I was in the later months they'd be pretty hard to misidentify. When I vomited in the trashcan in front of my house while taking my kids to the school bus, everyone on my block knew, except for me lol. Then dh insisted that I take a test, which I argued was stupid and a waste of money ...guess who had the last laugh.

A friend of someone I know found out she was pregnant when she was 7 months along. She thought that she had been nursing clean.
The kicker was that the next day she started bleeding, and they had to induce her right then and there. Here mom was out of town, she didn't even get a chance to tell her that she was pregnant before she gave birth. _________________ Really Awesome Mom!

| some people dont feel the baby kick very much or at all. a friend of mine is like that, though she is so skinny that u can tell from day one that she is expecting- she is huge by the end, but all the way through she hardly feels the baby move.

As an Obs/Gyn I once saw a woman who had had a gastric banding done. She suddenly stopped losing weight and saw her surgeon for that, he also couldn't figure out why. Because of PCOS she had always had very irregular periods. I saw her because she presented in our emergency room with stomach pains and a tumour in her abdomen. The tumour turned out to be an approximately 37 week fetus.
B.H. the baby and mother were fine. This woman was a completely normal person, good job, smart. She just wasn't expecting this (pun intended).
