I don't know the halachas for a non-Jew (it's probably the same) but if a Jew works for you and breaks something as part of the work (like in this case) you cannot ask them to pay for it.

Of course not. If I break a piece of equipment at work, it is replaced by my employer -- it doesn't come out of my salary. I don't see what my religion has to do with it.

I know a Jewish woman who always broke stuff like fridge shelves before Pesach...me. Your cleaner is just your shaliach for breaking it.

Many Jews don't know halacha, some non jews who work for Jews know it (enough even for shabbes gentile families to intermarry in the kehila!).

I would definitely NOT charge the cleaning lady for an accident. She feels bad enough as it is. Besides, this might be her only source of income, and imagine her going home penniless.

My former cleaning girl also broke my fridge shelf. She looked so horrified that I immediately told her I have a warranty and not to worry about it. (The fridge was under warranty, but it didn't cover the shelves).
I bought a piece of plexiglass for 50 shekels (about $14) to replace it.

hmmmm....my dh breaks things when he is cleaning. Maybe I should charge him every time he breaks something. But then again, maybe he should charge me every time I lose somehting. Confused

I thought chickpeas too!!!!! I was like huh??? took me a few seconds there... not so nice. this site is accessible to EVERYONE. you can find this posting if you google it-- theyll be searching for canned beans and see a jewish lady complaining about her clumsy maid and wanting to charge her for breaking something...doesnt look so good..
But,
it was good that you posted your question, because Im sure your not the only one who was unaware of protocol in this situation-- I never even thought about it.. so now alot more people know. Smile
