Fast - goya broke fridge shelf - WWYD?

She was cleaning it and dropped it - glass shattered. It's probably going to cost a pretty penny to replace. I have to call the company. Should the $$ come out of what I pay her???

My Dad used to get upset with my Mom when she broke anything while cleaning. He would say How come I never break anything?
But clearly if anyone was going to break anything it would be her because she did all the cleaning. Duh.
She does much of your cleaning - she will break something. If you did that cleaning eventually you would break something too.
It happens. Let it go.

Cleaning lady broke my oven. Did not ask her to pay. Du said I shouldn't even tell her..
But when she did the friege I made sure to handle the shelves!!

When my housekeeper broke a glass shelf in the refrigerator, she offered to pay from her salary, but I declined. She helped me jerry-rig a functional (but not very attractive) shelf until I had a replacement.

My cleaning lady did the same thing. She dropped it, it shattered, and she said, "It must have been old. That's why it broke." Rolling Eyes

I did not charge her for it. We put in a wooden board for now and I'll have to check into getting a new shelf.

What would you do if your Jewish sister in law/mothers helper/babysitter broke the shelf? It shouldn't be different.

This is exactly why I NEVER EVER allow my cleaning lady to clean my fridge, I know how fragile the glass is and I'm always extra careful.

Accidents happen, I can drop the glass just the same but at least I know I'm gonna be as careful as can be.

I also wondered why op wrote "goya" and not just "cleaning lady". The only reason I could think of to Don lacaf shus, is if she wanted an answer similar to a halachic shaila you would ask if a Jewish person had broken the glass.

I would not charge her, it was clearly an accident. She probably feels badly enough.

First- goya?? Really??
Second- it does not sound like she was being negligent. if I was the one cleaning the fridge and I broke a shelf , I would not like my dh to deduct the cost from his pesach gift to me. Does that make sense? Anyway, you get my drift...

I cleaned my fridge and dropped the large glass shelf above the fruit drawers. Who do you think paid the $30 to replace it with plexiglass? At least it can't break again,

And I put the glass shelf into boiling hot water in the bath by mistake and it shattered into 1,000 pieces!!

I'm also paying for it! Sad

My cleaning help did the same thing coupla years ago. She didn't drop it but it broke from too hot water. These shelves are tempered glass so it literally shattered in her hands! She was petrified watching it crack, bend and fall in a heap on the floor. I told her things happen. I didn't dream of charging her for it. My loss. Gam zu letova.

A Yeeda, as opposed to a goya, should know the halachot of an eved and would not have asked the question in the first place.

I would not charge a cleaning lady for accidental damage. Things break.

If you did charge her, chances are you will soon be breaking your own stuff becasue she will be gone.
