| The way the kids are in that story, not having the faintest clue what to do in a kitchen, and the way the mother is, not having seen any need to teach her kids what to do to prepare food or other basic household tasks, do you see it as something unusual or is it normal in your experience? To me, it seems like a Purim joke. My 3 year old seems to know more than they do about housework. I can't relate to it at all. Does anyone else find it funny? Do you think it's intended to be funny?

| I think the author wants the readers to get a feel for just how involved Tova is in everyone's lives to show you how she's made them so dependant on her. I don't think it's so far fetched, I know of plenty of teenagers that have no clue what to do in the kitchen (esp boys). I just find it odd that after an entire year of seminary away from home, Brachie still doesn't know how to make tuna.

| Really? I wanted to start this thread after reading TT this Shabbos. I wanted to ask if anyone has ever been acquainted with an 18 year old so clueless that she didn't know how to make a tuna sandwich. But seeker, you say you have seen this IRL? Wow.

| This is exactly the point the author is trying to bring out. The mother is very ontop of her kids, coddles them too much. The father would love things to be different, more independance. look at shimon!

I agree, but as someone else said, it seems unbelievable that even after a year in seminary, Brachie doesn't know how to drain a can of tuna. And every time one of the kids says something about "making" tuna it cracks me up. What are they making exactly?

It does seem a little exaggerated but in this week's bina the question they're asking people is about how much do they think children should be involved with the kitchen and what their own experiences were and a few talk about not being allowed in the kitchen.
I myself, was not allowed in the kitchen because it would make the kitchen dirty, but I still knew how to make a few things.

I read that serial and said - that was me! Yes, there are kids like me out there. Kids who honestly had never "made" tuna before in their lives before getting married. Or eggs, or pasta, or anything else except for maybe a peanut butter sandwich.
We're out there. And awfully frustrated during shana rishona to find out how little we know.

| P.S. Some of the seminaries (including mine) served three meals a day. So us pampered princesses never even had to open up a can, assuming that we were okay with eating the school food.

one of my cousins was in tears the day after her wedding because some oil from the tuna splashed on her new robe when she drained it. she is the oldest daughter and had never set foot in the kitchen, her mother never let any of her 7 daughters help! _________________ http://www.autism-parenting.com

I still only cook the basics. I was never taught, and my husband cooks well and prefers his way to most people's. I help on Pessach or do very basic when he can't do it. My mom also was never taught. _________________
