Do the people who pride themselves on never going to doctors also avoid having proper health screenings such as mammograms, paps, and colonoscopies?

I think the amount of lawsuits in this country is actually just a sign of our litigous nature.

I mean we have people that sue companies for making their coffee too hot or for getting food poisoning from food that was thrown into a dumpster and then someone came by and ate it. The result? You get lukewarm coffe and companies have to throw bleach on any food before they throw it out.

Americans like to sue.

I couldn't agree with you more!!!!! In my family there are a few in the medical field and they are discouraging their kids from going into the field cuz it's more and more about fighting lawsuits than about focusing on the care....they hate it!

I still don't get the hype about Ami. The layout is messy, many spelling/writing mistakes and in general, it's just an odd magazine.

I agree! DH bought it for me last week because the grocery was out of mishpacha. It was a real boring magazine. Nothing beats Mishpacha, period.

I find very annoying mistakes in the Mishpacha, too. They actually once used the word "moister" to describe a cake.

What's wrong with "moister"? It's a word. What

ETA: With all the name-calling going on in this thread, I can see why there is a safe haven for Natural Parenting threads. Mods, I'm calling for some cleanup here. Help

I was taken aback by the one-sidedness of the article - it sounded as though the reporter had been brainwashed somewhat. I mean, I'm all for the natural parenting method - I B"H have used breathing methods instead of epidurals, rarely medicate, we eat only whole wheat, buy very little processed food, steer clear of candy (I keep a stash of organic lollies from the health-food for Dr visits), and avoid the newer vaccinations like H1N1, but the article seemed to take it too far. I was more creeped-out than inspired. I mean, has anyone read about the depredations of smallpox, G-d forbid? The lifelong results of polio? There's atime and place for everything, and most vaccines are a G-d given gift.

For those wanting a real-life story of the dangers of not immunizing, I'll give you one. My SIL in Israel chose not to immunize her children. Her husband then came down with the measles (due to unknowingly only being partially immunized as a child). Then followed her elementary aged child and her toddler. And then the newborn.

You know what? After going through that, she now immunizes her children.

Let me make sure I understood your post correctly.

The danger of not vaccinating is that the children can get sick.

Was that your point?

Hashem Yaazor, tell me one person who actually wants their newborn and toddler to contract measles?

ILoveLife, I've had paps done during pregnancy all the time. Dr Rebarber usually does one at the first visit regardless where youre in your pregnancy. mammograms arent done in childbearing years anyway.

That wasn't my question. I was asking if the only side effect was that they contracted the measles, but B"H didn't suffer long term effects, or there were complications from the measles.
Because I think it's pretty obvious to those who don't vaccinate that their child is statistically more susceptible to a disease that is around. I think most people who opt to not give the vaccine (ever or that time) are aware of that risk.

I was trying to find out if there was more to the tale. The word danger just seemed out of place. There is a danger to everything, and this is scary, but so is the vaccine to certain people. It's a matter of choosing which "danger".

Didn't see this discussion, but yes, my midwife does a Pap smear if it's been over a year since the last one -- during pregnancy. She does NOT do them postpartum where there is more likely to be cervical abnormalities.

Unless someone has a history.

Mammagrams are useless for young women. If there is a concern, the first thing the doctors do for a young woman is an untrasound of the breasts.

Doctors do not make a killing on vaccinnes -they sometimes even lose money. The average insurance company pays the doctor $3 to $6 above costs. For instance where I work the meningitis shot cost approx $106 -ins. allowance is Approx $112. only on the flu shot do we get approx $9 above cost.
