| |
| Hi, we're looking to move to Lakewood as DH got a job offer close by. We are yeshiva/Bais Yaakov type, both working, moderate not too yeshivish yet not too liberal. We are in our mid-late twenties, 2 kids and one on the way and looking to rent, but not a basement. Since I do not have any family there I'm interested to know what neighborhoods would be appropriate for us, as I understand that there are many now.

coughlin street or chestnut area has a nice crowd
raintree often has homes to rent not basements, however its an up and coming neighborhood, many frum people and a few shuls but still many non-jews live there.
the masa umatan has a bunch of listings of rentals in a variety of areas. there are several townhouses in different areas for rent so you can check out those areas.

| Make sure though that you have jewish neighbors. Im sure you will want your kids to have someone to play with. Would you be open to renting a duplex or a townhouse, or you specifically want a stand alone house?

Hi thanks for the info. We would be open to rent a townhouse, 2 family, or stand alone house - anything but a basement as DH cannot stand basements.
I heard that Chestnut is not very Jewishly populated - is that true? Also I heard from one source (which may not be reliable) that it has very modern people. I want to know how accurate that is. We don't have a TV or watch movies however I get manicures, wear denim and the likes.

| The pple are not modern per se. They are nice families where the husbands are working and not in yeshiva. I know a few families living there. Its more a baale batish crowd.

It sounds to me like you would fit right in to Somerset Meadows!
It's a new neighborhood further east than the original Chestnut neighborhood, and it's all Jewish.
The people are not very modern - the husbands are mostly working, and the wives sound very much like you.

Just wanted to add that although others will disagree Chesnut does have a name of being more modern. I don't think it's fair to tell you it's not true and than have you be upset later on. It's definitely not the same now but there was a lot of talk in the past few years. To say otherwise is not fair to the OP. Research where you want to live and ask around to make sure you are getting what you want. Lakewood is full of rentals these days and you should be able to find a house rental in whatever area you like.
anonymous because I KNOW I'm going to get in trouble for what I just said.

I would agree with the last poster about Chestnut. You might want to look at Westgate.
You can PM me, if you'd like me to set up a place for you to spend Shabbos ...

Does Chestnut refer to Chestnut street?
Does anyone know anything about townhouses on Route 88?

Chestnut refers to Chestnut Street and the streets around it, such as Mountaivew, Idalia, Colonial, etc.
Somerset Meadows is further east, and it includes Coughlin Street and Vermont Avenue.
By townhouses on Route 88, you mean Lakeview? I'm not sure exactly what type lives there.
