| I was wondering if there's anyone out there who thinks along the same lines as me - "I can find many other ways to spend $40, I'll wash my wig myself, thank you very much."

yes, me!
and the time to coordinate appointments, dropoff, pickup, waiting, parking and all that - I'll do it myself, thank you.
now if only I'd stop procrastinating and do it more often! it really doesnt take long

I actually do a mixture of both. My sheitel is naturally long and straight. To style it like that, I've started doing it myself, but when I have a special simcha coming up, my hairdresser/ sheitel macher has a great way of curling the bottom that looks gorgeous, so if I want that I'll bring it to her, because I can't do that on my own. My 7 year old dd actually mentioned yesterday that she thought I had 2 sheitels - one curly and one straight. What's nice is that over time, the curls "fall" a bit, and I am left with a loose curl that is very pretty and flattering. That being said, when it falls to the point that it looks odd, I will wash and blow it myself.

Sometimes I do.
It never looked terrible, but sometimes it looked better than others. I got better at it.
A friend of mine who took a shaitel course taught me how to wash it. Just wash, not set, so I made up that part myself. I also have a very forgiving shaitel it looks decent without being blow-dried, and I can brush down any curls that get too wild.
I don't know how blow-drying a shaitel differs from blow-drying hair.

| I wash and blow my own wigs all the time, by now it takes me pretty quick, about 30 minutes each and it's convenient to just do it when I need. If I have a simcha or for yom tov I do try to give it in, after all, in the end of the day I think professionals can do it nicer. I figure with 3 wigs I'm saving about $100 a month doing it myself.

How often are you washing your wigs? They don't need to be done every month, especially if you have 3 and rotate through.

I do it myself so it looks natural (no hairdo/blowdrying). _________________

| I have a wavy one and a straight one. the wavy one I wear on shabbos, and the straight one is a pony shaitel that I wear during the week. I wash them myself and save a whole lotta mulla that way! and its not that hard!

| I do. in five years of marriage, I've had my sheitel done once. I wash it, comb it out carefully, and let it air dry. sometimes I touch it up with a hair iron, but usually not.

I have 3 wigs. 2 of them I do myself, they are the cheaper ones like a Milano and a JAP.
I have one expensive one that I paid $1600 for, no way do I dare touch that, to nervous I'll ruin it somehow so I give it to a friend who only charges $25, and she's a pro.

| I have 2, and even though I took a sheital course in seminary, I would be way too nervous to do it myself. On ly had them done once, but then again, only been married a year, and 6 months out of the year, it's too hot to wear them!

| It really depends on the sheitel. Some styles and sheitel types are easy to wash yourself as the hair just falls into place. However, not all styles or sheitels are that easy to style yourself. It also depends a lot on how handy you are with your sheitels (do you have two left hands?) So there's no "one size fits all" answer to that question.
