There's a report on 1010wins (IIRC) stating that he offered the thieves his wallet, but they chose to beat him, tear his tzitzit, etc instead, making it pretty clear that this was a hate crime. How sad. Refuah shleima to the victim.

I told the story to dh. He said in the last few years rhere were two cases in Europe, with similar story.
One didn't make it (he had a deal with the local non Jewish mafia that turned wrong and they made an example of him ). The second one was part of the gay underground and it was a SM thing in the beginning, then it went too far, he stopped it and they took revenge on him later.
In all three cases there are lots of similarities which is why he thought of them on the spot.
