Are you careful about germs between family members? Do your kids share food, cups, utensils...? Would you eat from the same plate as your child? (I'm obv. not talking about if anyone is sick)

I'm not makpid. Of course we are mechabed everyone with their own plate, cup, utensils, but will let them eat each other's leftovers if they want. They also share pacifiers although b"H we're pretty much phased out of the paci stage. We feed the kids bites of food from our plates with our utensils all the time. Of course I'm more careful if someone's sick.

Just wanted to tell you again! You seemed pretty shocked.

(In any case, I think I shocked enough people for today. Good night.)

I'm also pretty makpid. That doesn't mean my kids won't drink from their siblings' cups...it means that I don't like it and I try to be mechanech them otherwise. My older 2 understand it a whole lot better than my third Smile

You still have to wash, for example, your own underwear in warm or hot water, and dry on warm or hot, to kill your own germs, even if only you are wearing them.

Why do we have to mechanech them otherwise? Is it not a jewish concept to share?

We share. It's a mitzva to share Wink , but I do tell them not to share their germs (I mean when they're sick). One of my ds will always complain about eating from someone elses food or utensil, but when "no one" is looking, he'll drink from a bottle or something like that. Rolling Eyes Hey, it's a 2 way street!!

We try not to share communicable diseases in our home. No, not everything is meant to be shared.

I don't believe in germs. In other words, we share everything, adults and kids, barring illness. We're doing fine so far, B"H!

The family that slept together, strepped together.

Shoulda known that when my 12yo boy crawled into our bed 2 nights ago it must have meant something bad was gonna happen... we are all on antibiotics today.

yeah we all share germs of all sorts here. Actually they are rarely ever sick which is why we were all shocked to find that we are all sick with strep now.

I just think it's gross. Kids pick up germs from their classmates and bring it home. Everybody is carrying around germs from who knows what. No thanks.

How about pinworms? I'm very careful about handwashing in my family but just in case I won't eat anything off their plates. Once they touch it it's in the garbage if they don't finish it.

There's a lot of sharing going on in our home, but we often wash our hands with soap, and use antibacterial gel (not in an extreme way). Always before we eat, even if it's just a snack.

When my kids were little strep and ear infections were almost monthly. Then I became very strict about hand washing and sharing food. Times they would get sick went down at least fifty percent.

GR is right - it's bad enough what kids are exposed to in school. Why would you then want it spread in family. I think it's very naive to say there are no problem with family germs. Have some sympathy on your kids, help spare them from getting sick more often than they need to.
