What say you? I do think if you are hungry you should eat real food. OTOH the kids of the users should be able to have some sort of treat once a week or so. Where to draw the line? _________________ All you are is what you do.

| Actually, I think it's pretty simple: if the government is paying for your food, they have every right to dictate what kind of food you can buy. Don't like it, don't take their money. Or take the money, stick to their list, and use your own money for treats.

| Part of the problem is that soda can be a lot cheaper than juice. You can buy 2 liters of soda for .99. Try buying 2 liters of juice for that price. So in order to make the food stamps stretch, families will buy the soda.

Why does soda need to be the treat? Why can't it be cake or something that at least has some nutritional value?
I think it's about time. Soda is taxable. I.e. NOT food. _________________ http://a-natural-birth.com

There is no need for either.
Water is the healthiest drink, and the most thirst quenching.

Soda is poision...water is so much better for you! Juice isn't so great for you either. Every nutritionist that I have ever been to told me not to drink juice.
DH and I gave up Soda about 10 months ago and haven't looked back! _________________ "G-d I trust will understand, I'm not so sure about the neighbors.." -Yentl

we buy ginger ale soda for shabbos. It's the least artificial of them all... and I love the taste. _________________ http://www.autism-parenting.com

I honestly can't remember the last time I bought sweet soda. Its seltzer and grape juice on Shabbos and water during the week. I stopped buying soda even when we have guests. _________________ If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

yep - I don't think the government should subsidize your junk food.

I think it is a fantastic idea. It does allow pure fruit juice btw.
| Quote: | The ban would apply to any beverage that contains more than 10 calories per 8 ounces, except for milk products, milk substitutes like soy milk and rice milk, and fruit juices without added sugar.
|
when my mother was a little girl in england, everything was rationed so she had almost no sugar growing up. She said everyone was really healthy.
I thought this was a great idea too:
| Quote: | The department recently launched a pilot program to encourage food stamp recipients to make more healthful choices in their food shopping. Under the program, involving 7,500 randomly selected households in Massachusetts, participants get 30 cents added to their benefit balances for every dollar they spend on fruits and vegetables - which reduces the cost of fresh produce by almost one-third.

ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH THE ABOVE.
The idea behind it is that they are trying to reduce the obesity level in low income families - who tend to buy the cheaper and less healthy items.
A package of potato chips are much cheaper than a bag of fresh fruit.
I think it is a great idea on their part.
