| |
| I live in Monsey and my ds is 2.5 and we are starting to look into schools for him for next year. The best school for him seems like Bais Dovid. My husband is chassidish, although he learned in a litvish yeshivah for a few years, and I grew up litvish, went to bais yaakov ( my family is slightly chassidish) so I consider ourselves litvish/chassidish. My husband would like our sons to know Yiddish and be in a chassidish type of enviroment, but would not send to a regular chassish chedar. So all in all from what I heard Bais Dovid sounds like it's for us. For those who know the school, do you think that's where we should send? So I'd like to know, do they hit? Does anyone know their policy with it? Also when should we apply? Is it too early to start now? Is it true it's very hard to get in? (that's what I've been told from many people). If you can just explain in general what type of school it is and who it's geared towards, that would be helpful. Thank you!

You should apply on his first birthday. It's a bit late IMO to apply to any cheder now, so do it ASAP. I'm not sure if this is up your alley, but perhaps also look into Degel Hatorah. Different shnit, but might also work. _________________ Live the life you want to live. Be the person you want to remember. Make decisions. Make mistakes. If you failed, at least you tried.

Do chassidish people send to Degel Hatorah? I thought its only yeshivish?

It's an excellent Yeshiva. "They hit" is a ridiculous statement. It's one Rebbe that parents were having issues with , as far as I know. (and you can talk to the rebbe and insist he not touch your child.)
all the families I know that send there are extremely happy. The parent body consist of a nice mix of chasidish, litvish and yeshivish. They do screen their families well, and IMO it's not too late to apply anywhere.

Are you kidding LOL? You should start applying now, its not too late (I applied in June for august LOL), but they have a TINY nursery class, and your son will have to be 4 by Dec 31 to go into kindergarten. They take all kinds of people, but lean more toward yeshivish. The rebbi's there teach in yiddish, but the boys speak english between themselves. Rabbi Mashinsky is the principal for grades K-4 and does not allow hitting. Rabbi Bauer does, but I'm hoping he won't be such a big force in the yeshiva by the time my son reaches the older grades. So far we're happy there.
Feel free to PM me if you want more specific info.

So, to make sure I am understanding this correctly: Kids are only hit by the rebbeim if their parents WANT them to be hit?!

It's been quite a few years but my brothers went there. They were happy in the elementary school, but later on (Mesivta) they were not.
Two of my brothers ended up switching to Adas Yereim Vien (elementary).

I don't know this school, but:
-a number of schools still hit, because it is very ingrained.
-you should be able in all cases to tell the rebbe not to hit YOUR kid
Yes many Jewish parents believe in hitting. This is the traditional way, there is no denying it. There are even halachos on how to do it, and some rabbanim still recommend it.
I remember an older person telling my parents I would end up on the scaffold because they didn't hit (meaning it would make me a bad person).
Mechanchim who say hitting is a good tool: R' Poultorak, Sarah Chana Radcliffe come to mind.

Many others don't speak for it but allow it.

No, from what I understand it's not rabBEIM that hit, it's one rebbe that has hit on occasion.

They hit is correct. t's not just one rebbe. The menahel hits and the rebbeim hit, at least from fourth grade on. In younger grades maybe they don't hit - maybe - but they do lock boys in closets and tie them to chairs.
There is a basis for hitting in halacha, but many feel Bais Dovid goes too far. OP has head a range of opinions, so now she can make her own decision. I suggest she spend some time doing research on google as well.
