I had both meat and dairy placemats; until I found out that my family had mixed them up and they went right into the garbage (OK, recycling).
What do you do, and how do you keep them separate ?

use cloth ones that can be washed.

They're totally different colors/patterns.
Though now we deemed the table milchig and have a table cloth (such a plastic covered one) for fleishig during the week.
