I know yom tov is hebrew, but what is yontif? Is it yiddish or it became a word because when people say good yom tov, they say it fast and it sounds like that?

I actually wonder about shalashudis more than yontif... because if I stretch it in my mind I can see yontif evolving from some accent/fast talking but I just cannot make seudah shlishis sound like shaleshudis no matter how hard I try... maybe some yiddish person here can elucidate...

gee, that's how I talk at home...I speak "Israeli" outside and "Ashkenazis" at home which the kids think is really funny.

But when I hear my Israeli born children saying "I'm gonna chalish mommy", I burst out loud. Ashkenazi modern orthodox Jewish children born in Israel whose mother tongue is Hebrew saying that!

Yontif is the yiddish version of yom tov.

Just like besoilem = beth olam, besalmen = beth almin, balabuste = baalat bayit, yankef = yaakov and many more.

Because we eat the first two meals because we're hungry, but eating the third one, even if we are not, shows all three were l'koved Shabbos and not for ourselves.
