If you will be able to pay all obligations from paycheck to paycheck (meaning take this $1000 out of the picture and you will be able to cover everything you need) then def get the shaitel! obviously for $1000 you wont be getting a custom made for you shaitel- but you can afford a good quality nice one that will make you feel like a million dollars. of course make sure dh is ok with it.

from what you said everything is covered and dh agrees then go ahead!!

Personally when I got a birthday check from my dh's grandparents (and he also gets them) I said thats for me. (and his for him) obviously if it had been more then $20 I might have said some and some- but I bought myself a nice little necklace for under $20 and the rest was put in savings. dh put his $20 into the money he was saving for a new camera. however my graduation present gifts I put into savings... cause its a little diff kind of gift (in my mind)

once we have kids and more obligations I may very well do things differently but till then...

OP, I've done exactly this. About eight years ago, I purchased my first and only "custom",( that is out of the box semi custom) sheitel for $850 that I earned as a daycamp morah, plus 100 that my dh added, the other $5-600 of my paycheck went for my dd's daycamp. Everyone in the family, including dh who could not get this for me, and who I never asked to either, was thrilled for me, and during the grand family trip to pick me up from the sheitel macher, ds piped up as I got into the car "Mommy, let me see your costume!" Laughing

When dd got married, that sheitel was already in shreds, but for the chasunah, I got a simple "customdesign" Judy sheitel,($500, plus $150 for the cut - prices have gone up!) and was very happy with it, so I am not one to say that a higher end sheitel is a must, but for some people like myself who have made do with less, and now are feeling that they need it, I would say trust their intuition, sometimes it is a necessity.

My dd, the kallah did get a Shevy Elite (not top of the line, but very nice), which I recently finished paying up for along with the other wedding bills. In the near forseeable future, as a Kollel wife, and iy"h a shlucha she will not be getting any other high quality ones, and I am very happy that she has that sheitel, and got started off on this mitzvah knowing that she can feel good about how she looks. Now, furniture she got almost nothing, and they are managing.

It's basically a matter of priorities.
I venture to say that those who consider a sheitel for OP a luxury are in all likelihood not (exclusively) sheitel wearing women.

There is no reason whatsoever for OP to feel or look nebby, by her community's standards just because other people don't need a sheitel. She does need one!

Enjoy your gorgeous sheitel (even though according Lori ALMOST live, camp is not a luxury but a necessity!)
