Has anyone heard of this fish ban due to the anisakis worm? According to my research, OU is allowing all fish as per usual but Star K gives a specified list of fish that are okay. On the list it includes NO salmon, fresh, frozen,or canned, even with a hechshar.

Any thoughts on this? New information? What are you holding?

According to their list seen here http://star-k.org/cons-vegdetail.php?ID=74 you can eat farm-raised salmon but not wild salmon.

Yes we eat salmon and drink Brooklyn water too. We live on the wild side.

IIRC the water thing came up when a guy checked supposedly bug free lettuce, so the bugs must have come from the water (no way they came out of the lettuce).. Go figure.

In the Star-K list it states in their update that you may use canned salmon only if it is mashed. That sounds so strange to me. So if the bugs are mashed it's ok to eat? Scratching Head

I had never heard of this, so I googled the parasite.

Yuck.

It can do some really nasty things to your intestines, plus the image of coughing up worm larvae is just gross.

The good news is that it's fairly easy to prevent. Proper cooking or freezing kills it. I now feel better about feeding my family frozen farmed salmon.

I must confess I'm a bit rusty on exact halacha, but there's a difference (or perceived difference) between digesting the whole bug/worm vs part of the bug. For the same reason, some people who won't eat whole strawberries do eat pureed strawberries in milk shake, ice cream etc. Can this be a similar situation?

I have to admit to going to this website and that to check up on the current "reid" for things like strawberries, etc. but I would suggest with the fish - and this applies to everything really - to ask your local vaad hakashrus. They're definitely on this and can answer your questions.

correct, there is a difference in eating a part of an insect and an entire one

We don't eat wild, only farm raised, though most US poskim hold that the parasite isn't a problem. Please ask your LOR.
