Would you let a 5 year old girl use a sharp knife to chop veggies? I never would before, but Friday she was begging me to let her so I did and watched her very carefully. My older kids were shocked that I was allowing it.

I have let my 4 and 5 year olds use a BUTTER knife to help me chop vegetables when I am right next to them. Only soft things, like cucumbers and mushrooms and also apples/pears for a fruit compote when soft.

I wouldn't let them use a sharper knife yet. They relish the opportunity to be big girls in the kitchen and it keeps them happy and occupied.

I wouldn't. Thats just me. I would try to give her something else to do -maybe let her wash dishes, set the table, mix the salads, etc.

I wouldn't, but when she's a little older:

The Pampered Chef sells a knife for kids that's not pointy or too sharp. I got it and it's good enough for cutting up veggies (although it doesn't cut cleanly) but my kids love using it because it makes them feel grown-up and it gets the job done.

I usually let my 5.5 yo cut veggies with a plastic knife. Last week, he wanted to cut peppers and the plastic knife would have mushed them. So I cut the peppers into strips and gave him a 26+ yo serrated knife and let him use that. It was fine, with supervision of course.

I let my 5 year old DD chop veggies with a regular paring knife. I stand right over her, my hands right over hers and don't take my eyes away for a SECOND and she does a great job and is so proud of herself.

But you have to know your kid. She's very serious and has awesome fine motor skills and very good eye-hand coordination. If your child isn't coordinated, it might not be safe to let them use a sharp knife at that age...

No way! Even if you watch her, you can't stop her from cutting herself accidentally. The knife can slip or she can stab herself. Heck, I'm 6 times her age and I cut myself sometimes!

I do let my kids use a butter knife (younger kid) and table knife (older kids).

Okay, what's a table knife? Is that the one I have that's like similar to a butter knife but sharper pointed tip?

Oh, and as for slipping knives, I ended up in the ER Erev Pesach when my brand new swiss peeling knife slipped and pierced the soft part of my hand between my thumb and forefinger, nicking an artery. The blood was squirting in pulsating streams across the room and my husband was at shul (not sure which one, without a cell phone) and I was home with my kids. I didn't know if he was even coming home or going straight to work. B"H I remembered to apply pressure and elevate my hand above my heart and I dialed Hatzala with my pinky finger and quickly rattled off instructions to my almost 6 year old in case I passed out.

So yeah, I reiterate what I wrote above: please don't let a 5-6 year old use a sharp knife!

I let my 6 year old use a knife, its not a super sharp knife.

my hands were right over my son's I adjusted the knife before he made a cut. I also taught how to cut on a cutting board. how to hold the veggy with the fingers out of the way.

If you do, supervise closely. I have older kids who cut cheese for themselves. My 6 year old decided to cut herself a slice of cheese - she missed and cut her finger pretty bad and needed stitches. It will probably be a long time before she's not afraid of using a sharp knife.

Absolutely not! Are you kidding? Shocked I taught them from a very early age that it's dangerous. When they want to help peel vegetables, I give them an old, blunt peeler. Otherwise, no, no, no. I don't understand why mothers who scream child abuse for smacking a child for running in the street or are vehemently opposed to locking a child in his/her room can allow, no..give, a child a tool for cutting. What would CPS say to that if the child chops off a finger or two by accident?

I learnt my lesson the hard way when I let my 5 year old cut a cucumber with a plastic knife. She cut herself and everyone looked at me like I am a horrible mom. We going back to only cutting very very soft things or just mixing the salas.

It's the knife that comes with your flatware set. It's the knife you eat with. (Not the steak knife, though.)

Okay, so it is the one I was trying to describe. But who says I eat with a knife? Wink

I'm sorry that everyone looked at you like you were a horrible mom...but why would this be a problem? Using a paring knife can truly be dangerous (proof is the person on this thread who injured herself, and the kid who needed stitches). But a plastic knife? Worst it can give your kid is a little cut, right?

I have no problem letting kids make mistakes, as long as the repercussions of those mistakes are not truly dangerous or long-lasting. Neither one of which describes cutting yourself with a plastic knife.

Just because people look at you like you're a horrible mom for doing something, doesn't mean that you are - or that you should stop it.

This knife is great for kids, It cut anything but skin (ie it will not cut their hand). I used to sell Pampered Chef and this was a very popular item. Kids love it & so do mommys.
ETA: And just FYI plastic knives are often MORE dangerous than a sharp knife. They make a very jagged cut that can heal improperly or be difficult to stitch (and yes a plastic knife can cause a cut that needs stitches)
