| |
| I was on the subway recently, and a girl sitting across from me was reading some Christian pamphlet entitled "The importance of understanding G-d's name" (or something along those lines). What caught my eye was the "artwork" on the cover page- it was Hashem's name, yud-kei-vav-kei. I wanted to know what you wise imamothers think: is it considered sheimos or not? And if it is, would you ask the girl for the paper to make sure it didn't get thrown out?

That would be a good idea if I'd actually had the guts to go over to her and ask her for it...

Ask your rav, but I think it has to be burned, not double bagged... _________________ "The problem begins with... their political hangers oners... such as Anat Hoffman. She is a davener like I am a chinese belly dancer." (FS)

Ah yes, it's that time of year again. Summer in NYC = Those Jews for J-sus jerks. (See my thread about how I ended up on a cruise ship where they were having a convention the week before Pesach. They were wearing Magen Dovids and talking about Christianity. I wanted to jump off the balcony.)
Different Rabbonim have different advice on this. Some said to destroy as much of the literature as you can, even if it has the name on it. As such, when I see the bright green and pink pamphlets on the subway stairs, left in a phone booth, or on top of the garbage can walking through the station, I bend down (is that tznius?), pick them up, and throw them out.
DH nicely asks if he can have a stack. After he is given them, he quietly disposes of them.
Let me know if you'd like me to ask DH for sources both for speaking to her to not throw them out, and throwing them out. I hold by Rabbonim who say to toss the material, as it uses Hashem's name in vain/incorrectly.

| I don't think it would be. Wouldn't that mechayev us to go through this garbage, which we shouldn't do?

my husband was just guessing, he didnt actually look it up. the reason he said to double bag it and throw it out was so that someone going through the trash wont find it and read it.
but burning would be more effective for that.

any missionary literature we rip up before throwing away (but my husband jokingly says that causes an issue, since we get enjoyment from ripping it up, and we shouldnt get enjoyment from such things)
Not sure what we'd do if it had HaShems name in it _________________ ~Rebecca

| OP here, thanks for all the replies! It was really more of a theoretical question, as it was a non-Jew who had the pamphlet and not me (at least I'm fairly certain she wasn't Jewish!), but it was very interesting to read all the different opinions. Thanks again!

I know of 2 Js for Js that are Jewish---so they could be Jewish-unfortunately. 1 of them (and I guess all the members do this) goes as far as calling his church a shul and his minister -a Rabbi. They go all out so that people can think Js for Js are Jewish so they can lure them in and try to convert them---they make me so sick---I tried to argue with one but gave up because they're thinking is just so all over the place and so wrong.
I have a friend who is reform and she lived next door to a J for J. When she was about 11 or 12, she went over to help the mom with the kids and the mom wanted her to read a book to her kids. It started out as a Jewish book and then ended up being about chrisitanity. She went home and told her mother about that book. Her mother went next door to give that mom a piece of her mind and told her that she better not try to shove her mixed up ideologies on her young daughter EVER AGAIN and she told her that she was not allowing her daughter to help her out again. I have friends of all different faiths and we can talk about anything and everything---but when it comes to Js for Js-I have absolutely no tolerance for the fact that these people try to trick vulnerable people and lure them in to convert them..

| These people got into our shul and left their pamphlets behind. I'm pretty sure I remember the rav just trashing them. I do remember him being so mad, that people were leaving the door unlocked. We have a code to get into, but I guess that can be disabled. Leaving the building vulnerable to this kind of stuff.
