yes, we have rats! we live in an apt. building in Brooklyn, and we thought we had mice issues.
We bought a rat zapper, hoping to catch those little pests. At 3am, DH came to tell me that we caught something more than a mouse - I came out to check. Yep - it was a rat! He dumped it & we reset the trap.
Couldn't sleep anymore. So came out to the computer, however scared I was. I figured better my mind on something else than tossing & turning in bed.
Well, what do u know? As I'm sitting here, I hear all kinds of noises by the raidator, and then I turn - and it's sitting there! Int he middle of the floor!
I ran back to bed. Too afraid to stay out here. turned on the radio to put me to sleep. Slept for 1 hr (finally!) & then DS woke me up.
What do we do?!?!?!?!?!?
I am so petrified to be home today without DH. We can't reach landlord today cuz it's Sunday. We want to move. But it hasn't been happening since it's too expensive & we don't want another place with mold, gas & rodent issues.

UGH!
Wish I could offer help/advice but it seems like you need a professional.
That is one reason why I never wanted to live in an apartment building.
Its hard to miceproof and ratproof, but not impossible.
Guess you gotta do it! Rats are dangerous!
Good Luck!

Uggggg. I feel for you. When I was newly married living in an apartment bldg, my husband came home from Kollel one day to find me on the counter screaming. there was a mouse in the kitchen and there was no way I was getting off that counter. It's a gross feeling to be visited by these unwanted pests.
We mouse-proofed, set traps, filled holes etc.. However, when I ventured into the basement of the bldg and saw the place swarming with mice and rats I knew I lost the battle. If it's not dealt with from the source, it will never be completely mouse and rat proof.
I get the shivers thinking about it.

I feel for you. I had a rat a few months back. B'h It was only one, and we got it. I understand how horrifying it is.
What worked for us is the metal cage traps. I think they sell for around $20. When we did research online, it was the only trap that seemed to work well for rats. The snap traps didn't work at all, neither did the glue traps. So the metal cage trap with one piece of bamba hanging on the baiter. And that should do the trick. The thing with rats is they are very suspicious. It takes time for them to trust something new in their environment. So everything I have read says, to leave the trap in a location for a few days before baiting it.
Anyways, between your zapper and if you try this other trap you should G-d willing get them under control. Do the research online too. It's important you seal off any possible way they could be getting in.
I'm really sorry.

We had a rat problem a few years ago -- a house next door had become dilapidated and was apparently not only hosting a large rat mishpacha, but was sending them out to do kiruv! Our rats also had remarkably strong hearts and steady nerves!
The rat zapper saved us! We even killed a few rats that were too big to get all the way into the device -- ugh! But eventually we got them all -- or they put out the word that they were no longer welcome.
If you haven't already, try baiting the rat zapper with peanut butter, and if possible, get a few rat zappers. Good luck!

yes, we have the rat zapper.
that's how we caught it. DH was just saying yesterday that maybe it's too big to catch the mice. But a few hrs later he came to tell me that anything smaller would not have worked - as it didn't even completely fit inside the zapper.
