I JUST LOST MY JOB DUE TO THE ECONOMY

Like many people I was laid off this past week due to the economy. I live in Monsey, NY. I need a job fast!!!! We have a lot of bills to pay and my husband is only working part time so his salary alone is not gonna cut it.
I need suggestions of where to look for jobs besides www.luach.com. I've heard craigslist is a huge waste of time. Suggestions please....

First things first. Apply for unemployment.

Network. Tell everyone you're looking for a job. I mean everyone -- the person next to you at shul, or at the supermarket. Have coffee with people in your field. Call people.

Read the want ads in the local paper. NY Times. Monster. Hotjobs. OU Job Board. Craigslst. SimplyHired.

OP - Craigslist is NOT a huge waste of time, 90% of my interviews and responses have been from Craigslist. I have gotten perhaps 2 follow-ups from Monster.com and CareerBuilder combined.

What are your skills?

A lot of companies post their jobs on their own websites. They often have a link that says Careers. I printed up a whole bunch of resumes & made personalized cover letters to go with each & dropped them off by the managers responsible for hiring (not HR, who often ignores people the first 40 times they apply).

I don't want to sound insensitive, but accept any job that you are capable of doing & pays. Even if it isn't what you would Like to do, or does not pay a lot. You have to show Hashem that you are willing to put out the Hishtadlus & then BE"H you'll be able to find something in your field that pays well too! The main thing is to keep davening!!!! I am basically losing my job too, and I live in monsey as well....

Its very hard and I truly feel for you!

I found my job in January thru Craigslist. I don't live in NY though, maybe it's different there.

I lost my job last August when I was 6 months pregnant with twins.

As you can imagine I was not anyone's first choice at that point. B"H I just got hired for another job this past week.

As everyone has been saying on this thread, you need to really network big time to get a job these days. Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job. Search every available avenue. You also need to "bring your A game" and and pursue jobs strongly. Re-do your resume, write excellent cover letters, prepare well for interviews, etc. It's a different world out there!

I lost my job a year ago and they called me back a couple of times but I refused. Unemployment was great for as long as it lasted. Now I have a better job then I had then. Go figure..

Have you tried www.indeed.com it is the clearinghouse for every job that is posted on the internet. It is very helpful. Also, LinkedIn is a great networking tool that's worth using.

I recently lost my job due to cuts at work as well. I guess it depends what line of work you're in, but I actually found my best leads via Craigslist. . .

And a few short weeks later I b'H started a new job that I found on Craigslist, with several advantages (including better pay Wink

) over the job I lost. I really hope that you will find this to be for the best, as I did. . .

lady, you think you need a job fast??? well let me tell you something- I've lost my job over a year ago and my husband is also looking for a job. we make less money than our rent costs yet we somehow manage to get by being careful with the money we do have. It is hard, especially since Im pregnant, so besides no one wanting to hire me I have the concerns of how to support a child. so PLEASE dont fret about being out of a job for a week. be considerate. everyone has bills but it I dont think its fair to complain like your world is ending when youve only been unemployed for a week.
you can try to get unemployment money.
