So the dried split peas I have for some reason never get soft so I thought to use canned peas.
first recipe I made came out ok, the canned peas are sweet peas so it was too sweet for me.
This time I decided to try it again but to use spices to make it less sweet and it came out almost perfect. of course there is room to improve so if you have any ideas let me know!
Saute 2 onions in bit of oil
add 3 diced carrots
(celery could work too but I didnt have any on hand)
add salt pepper lots of cumin- cumin really made this great!
garlic and onion powder.
mix and saute till onions are sautéed but not burnt
put in 3 cubes of chulent meat and saute a bit
add 2 big cans of peas (I drained them but you could add with liquid)
pour in water to cover.
boil and simmer till carrots are soft.
take out meat- mine didnt fall apart, blend with immersion blender.
cut up meat into bite size pieces and put back into soup. add more water if want it thinner.
reheat and taste- add more spices if needed.. enjoy!
does not make a big pot of soup if you want more you'd need to double recipe..

I just wanted to let you know that there are 2 ways that I have found to work with dry split peas, after experiencing the same problem over and over again...
1) Soak the peas in cold water overnight, or at least for a couple of hours until you see that the peas have absorbed a lot of water. They will turn a bit of a brighter green. I change the water a few times during the process. When yo ucook the soup, make it as you usually do and let it simmer for abt 4 hours and the peas will get reall soft and mushy.
2) Make pea soup in a crockpot. I put everything in a liner but you can do without it. Just throw everything in and let it cook for about 6-8 hours on low. This is pure mushiness! We love it!!
good luck! _________________ For every minute of anger, you lose sixty seconds of happiness.

I've never tried either of the following methods but they may also work
1- use frozen peas
2- a pressure cooker. ( I just bought one and am so excited to use it)
