BY of Queens is said to be the best school in the area. It has a great reputation (I only have boys), but everyone that I know that has girls sends them there and are very happy there.

Where are you living?

I think they're pretty open about BTs, as I know BTs that send their daughters there, and others that will send their daughters there.

I've only heard amazing things about that school. Go for it!

I have a close relative whose girls go there. Seems really excellent. The kids seem to enjoy school overall, there is a nicely blended population but the values are very frum. They are very up-to-date with regard to educational methods, technology, etc. The kids come home all enthusiastic for every yom tov, etc.

I haven't been there since I graduated (I'm 25 now)

At the point where I was schooled, the classes were too big, non-full tuition payers were not being treated equally-

I was in a low level class that was comprised of kids with social and learning disabilities, and was never given a chance to learn really. I don't know hebrew because they dumbed everything down too much.

Worst of all, they didnt even tell my parents.

And when they did find out, they told them "Your daughter is going to be a mother anyway, its not like she's going to college"

So, if you want your kids to be Bais Yaakoved, frum, middot, they do teach that... but I do not think they do it in a way that is long lasting. I resent their style of education and I really feel shaky in my beliefs now. I think I was just brainwashed and it was short lived.

What evidence do you have for that? I taught in BYQ for seven years and never knew who in my class paid full tuition and who paid part and I treated them all equally. I worked in the administration for eleven years and ability to pay had absolutely no influence on class placement or the seriousness with which parents' complaints were taken.

Also, class size in BYQ - in my time anyhow, which must have overlapped with your school years - was much much better than in any Brooklyn school I know of. A class of 30 was considered huge. Most classes had around 25 students or less.

Was there possibly a reason they could have legitimately, although seemingly wrongly, felt that you belonged in a slower tracked class? Did your teachers not pick up on the fact that you didn't belong there? I am shocked that in eight years of schooling no teacher ever noticed.

I am sorry you had such an unpleasant experience in BYQ. I am sure there are others who did too. There are definitely children who could not keep up with their classes (the reason why special tracked classes were created) and probably also have resentment against the school for not offering them classes they could keep up with. That's why these classes were created.

thanks so much for your response. We live in Riverdale right now.... do you think they will be OK with that? what about the families. We are OOT but frum and decided to move to riverdale becuase it seemed more diveres...and a better fit for us OOTers Smile I don't want my child to be shunned because of where we live!! It seemed in many of the brooklyn schools she would be!

I went to BYQ ages ago and it was awesome. I am sorry someone else had a negative experience.
why would you want to send to Queens from Riverdale? It's a long commute for a child, is there nothing else closer? My cousins send somewhere in Manhattan, probably breuers. Have you checked into closer options?
You don't mention your hashkafa - although BYQ is definitely open to BT homes, it is very much a bais yaakov and your kids will get that. I have a friend that was sent there from a non-frum home in first grade and within a week she was telling them about shabbos and they pulled her out. I know that is not you, but just making sure that although the education is excellent, realize it is a BY education.

I am the person you replied to.

The tuition thing did not happen to me, it happened to my neighbor. The administration put her in a class like mine not because she was not smart, or because she was problematic, but because she did not pay full tuition. You as a teacher would not need to know this information, I guess.

I, on the other hand, was in a lower tracked class because of my inability to keep up. The teachers have too many kids in the class to help someone who is slipping, and so I was put in a class that my fellow classmates and I called "The Stupid Class."

Sound healthy? Looking back, we were swept under a rug, while the 'good' classes were put on a pedestal.

And in this large class, were kids who were from non-frum homes, learning disabled, troubled.

Wow. Boy did we feel special. We learned nothing. And my parents were not told I was in this class. They found out too late.

I hope you use this information to impove the school. Maybe they already did. I wouldn't send my daughters there if I got free tuition.

No, but as a member of the administration, I would have known this information. Such a thing never, to my knowledge, happened. Almost half the parent body did not pay full tuition. Do you think all their kids were put in the lower tracked classes?

My daughter goes to BYQ. We have absolutely no complaints.

to be fair - they have a repuation of doing thing their way - though so far that has not been a problem for us. I know people who were upset about which class their kids were placed in and there seemed to be nothing they could do to get her changed. but I don't hear this all the time, just from a few people.

They also have a repuation of catering to the average and above student. I have to tell you though, so far our experience has been that our daughter does not get lost - she's had struggles with certain subjects and her teachers were very caring and concerned and on top of it.

I also went to BYQ. I was also tracked in the lower level class. I agreed that I belonged there, but I resented the fact that no one tried to help me.

When I got to Shevach High School, one girl sat with me and taught me how to read Rashi. She changed my life forever. I moved up to higher level classes.

It was definitely wrong for the administration not to tell your parents. I came from a dysfunctional home. My parents didn't care.

Why didn't your parents hire tutors for you when they found out?

I went there too and think it is the best school around. They were very open minded and caring with a great education. My parents did not pay full tuition and I had a lot of social and academic struggles but was put in a "regular" class because they believed I could do it. I sometimes was given modified tests, and they really worked with me. They gave me the confidence I needed to prove to myself that I could do well in school.

Having said that, I have. No idea what the school is like now, I graduated 11 years ago.

I have a daughter there and have only been happy with the school. I have encouraged others to attend and our Rav encouraged us to send our daughter there. The school creates a happy, fun, happening environment with a very academic program (I've heard it called the Harvard of Bais Yaakovs) and a strong emphasis on middos. The teachers are excellent and know exactly how to get through to their students based on their likes and interests.

I really like that the parent body is varied with a large contingent of normal, middle of the road frum Jews with good solid values, a nice yeshivish contingent and plenty of more modern families and mothers with varying degree of hair coverings. Everybody seems to get along and it does not seem judgmental at all.

They have a reputation for excellence, and from what I've seen, it matches that expectation. (BTs would not be thought less of.) Good luck!

I went there
I had a great time with my friends, but the admin is terrible
what people are saying about the lower tracked students is true- I knew it and wasnt even in the low track
I agree that people not paying full tuition are treated lower, and my parents paid full
STAY AWAY

I would send to bnos malka if I daughters. everyone I hear loves it there, much more open minded, amazing staff, smaller although still large with around 400 students
