| |
I am currently living in a place where the job market for special education is not the best. we are thinking of maybe finding somewhere else to live in the future.
I am curious to know what kind of jobs are available in different cities in the USA for someone with a degree in special education and what is a typical salary.
Thanks in advance!

| jobs are hard to come by in every place. I'm in new york city and it depends on what you are looking for. SEIT caseloads are scarce. I don't usually see special ed schools advertising either. But if you were really looking here, I'm sure you could find something.

| Why are SEIT cases scarce? I just started doing SEIT and it was pure luck that I found something. But my friends who've been doing it for longer than me are still looking for work? IS it a flooded field or is the Board of Ed. cutting back?

From what I hear, ny and ca are the best places. I know people that moved from france, florida, and even ey to ny so their kid can get the most services. _________________ Sunday social program forming in Brooklyn for children with social delays. Pm me for more info

The board of ed. is more careful than they used to be.
There's a big need for SETTS - or p3 tutoring.

special ed is a huge field. finding a job in a preschool may be difficult but getting a job teaching in any old public school isn't too hard in nyc.
there's still a fairly large demand for special ed teachers, especially on the secondary level. starting salary is anywhere from around 45-55K and benefits are awesome.

But you do get placed in a public school. And some of them could be very difficult to work in. I've had incidents that I believe are anti-semitic and I have a relative who was treated so condescendingly that she quit. There's also some real inner city places if you can handle that.
There are also some good p.s. A lot depends on the area.

what do you mean get placed? not sure I follow you.
of course some of the schools are hard, but you only have to apply to those schools you would consider working at. but then again, the more desirable schools are harder to get into.
it depends on the teacher's mindset and desperation I guess. I was desperate to find a job (teaching math, which isn't exactly a saturated field) and I could only find a job at an "inner city" high school. people feel bad for me when I tell them where I work. I'm also pretty quiet and not exactly tough. but I learned how to work it and I actually love the job and b"h am very good at it.
maybe the OP could thrive in such a situation, maybe not. but the opportunities are definitely there.

op here.
nicole, im not sure what kind of background youre from so maybe we can't really relate in this area but do you find it hard to work with colleagues who are all very different than you? like do you sit in the teachers' lounge with them and shmooze? do you feel comfortable there? I don't think I would venture to do high school but maybe preschool.

I'm a BT and I'm modern so it's probably easier for me to fit in with the people I work with. I happen to be very close with my colleagues and I talk to many of them outside of work, too. they're all very awesome and respectful of the religion and love learning about it. (last year for twin day at my school, my principal and 2 other teacher dressed tznius and donned my extra sheitals so we could all look alike because they knew it would be harder for me to dress like them!)
if you're looking into preschool, finding a job will be more difficult, but on the plus side there are many jewish-run special ed preschools so that may ease the anxiety you have over potential coworkers. elementary is also difficult, but easier than preschool. the biggest need is middle school, because they're the most difficult.

Also, currently in NYC, CTT classes are in--Collaborative Team Teaching classes--in Elementary schools--that means there is a general education teacher and a special education teacher working together in a classroom and (ideally) only 1/3 of the class has IEPs. the special education teacher is typically responsible for students with IEPs as far as their special ed. concerns are but is also teaching lessons to the entire class....
Many of the schools I've had experience with (student teaching, itinerant teaching) are much more likely to hire teacher with dual certification even if it's just to be placed in a general education classroom.
You, OP seem to be a bit more interested in a frummer work environment. In NY there are lots of special ed. preschools (with far less financial benefits than a city public school) that are "frum" but are apparently competitive to get a job in.
To work as a SEIT in a preschool classroom, your best bet is to find a particular family or kid you could work with and then work backwards--have the parents approach the school and say, "I want Mrs. ______ to work with my child in kindergarten next year." _________________ "You can say this for ready-mixes - the next generation isn't going to have any trouble making pies exactly like mother used to make." ~Earl Wilson

thanks so much everyone for your info!
if I would like to work in nyc, I already know that that is the best place for frum special ed. also I have "pull" to get a seit job or headstart job. I can travel in because I don't live that far but automatically I lose money from travel and I would have to do less hours so it brings my income down a significant amount. public school sounds like the best bet but I don't know if I would feel ready to work in such an enviornment.
does anyone know what the options are in other places such as Monsey, or other out of town places (Cleveland, OH...)
also anyone have any info on the special school in Monroe? what is starting salary? how hard is the work?

| If you want to do Early Intervention, you shouldnt have a hard time finding a job. Monsey is flooded with Early Intervention programs, same for Brooklyn.

| I think that public schools curerntly have a hiring freeze in NYC. SEIT jobs are easier to get NOW than in the beginning of the year and easier to get in places that aren't in the heart of frum communities (where there already loads of therapists). But I often see agencies looking for SEITs.
