The kosher prenatals I ordered make me sick. My midwife really wants me to take a "food based" vitamin. I ordered one online that said it was "kosher certified" and when it came it only had a "K" on it. I called the company to complain and they said they had a Rabbi supervise their products. They gave me the name Rabbi Chiswell and his #. I've left 2 messages and haven't gotten a response. I know he's in Baltimore. My Rabbi said he couldn't find out anything. Does anyone know of this Rabbi? My thoughts are if he's Orthodox/Shomer Shabbos than the vitamins would be ok. Any suggestions?

What was the one you ordered?

ESPERAT by Floradix is a regular multivitamin which is kosher. Perhaps you could print out the vitamin contents for your midwife and she can then suggest what ELSE you should take (probably at least folic acid), and you can take those as regular vitamins (maxihealth etc). She should also check the contents of non-soluable vitamins (A, K, D, etc) to make sure it's not too high.

Here's another:

This is supposed to be a great all natural prenatal, but it's not certified kosher. But sometimes you can investigate the ingredients on these things, consult with your rav and the OU and make the determination for yourself. Not everyone's comfortable w/this though, up to you.

Good luck!

call the star-k in baltimore 410-484-4110 and ask if they have information about him. if the secretary doesn't know, ask to speak to one of the Rabbanim.

FYI:
PregVit is a prenatal vitamin certified under COR (Toronto) and comes in two pills, one for morning and one for evening with the Iron and Calcium split up (which is what generally causes nausea.) However since it's certified in Canada I'm not sure if it's available in the US...
