I went to the dentist to fill a cavity and he told me that it's more complicated than a cavity and to save the nerve he wont do a root canal but another procedure where he drills almost to the nerve and then covers the tooth with an air tight crown but it is not covered by my medicaid. I was in terrible pain and couldnt eat anything so I just went ahead with it. I paid a deposit of $300 and he put on a temporary plastic crown told me to come back in 2 week when the crown would be ready. This was about 2 months ago. I dont have a penny to spare and so I never went back.
What should I do?

I know he has payment plans but I cant afford more than $20 a month and then I'll be paying for years.

A different amother here, I need 2 root canals and I have medicaid. I heard that medicaid does not approve people anymore for root canal (they would rather people have their teeth pulled). Is there any other type of medicaid plan that would pay for the root canals???
btw, if it helps I don't have any pain.

If you have time, check if there's a local dental school where the work can be performed.

My husband is a dentist who accept Medicaid and other plans. I asked his opinion about your situation and this is what he said: You are jeopardizing your tooth by delaying the crown placement, as the temporary is not meant for long-term wear. I'm sure the dentist is anxious to place the crown as it can not be used by anyone else - it was made specifically for you. Have your husband contact the dentist and ask to speak to him in person regarding your financial situation. If he speaks in a respectful and appreciative manner, that will go a long way to helping the situation. See if your dentist is willing to compromise on the fee or if not, allow you to pay it out. Just remember you agreed to this service and it is better to pay it out slowly than not at all. The dentist has already incurred expense to the lab which fabricated your crown.

Also, there are bikur cholim organization that may help out with the cost, but you would have to apply and go through a whole process to get approval for that.

Yes unfortunately Medicaid/Americhoice will not pay for molar root canals anymore. You can try to get onto Healthfirst . Log onto Doralusa.com to find out more. Healthfirst will cover a molar root canal including the post and crown as long as x-rays clearly show that it's needed. If u can get onto Fidelis, even better, but I'm not sure what the criteria is for each.

BTW I work for Adler Dental Group, I do the insurance billing there, so this is right up my alley.

Doral pays very little, causing few dentists not to want to accept it.

I used to go to Adler and I have medicaid and he did NOT want to work with me. He said there is no way medicaid will approve a root canal and he doesnt wanna waste the time paper and ink on it. Between me and my husband we paid over $3000 to him in dental work and the wait there is INSANE!! If I have an appointment there at 10am I know I wont be done until at least 4. Is there anything that can be done about that?

I don't think it's harsh to go to another dentist. You're only as good as your staff.

Sorry Mrs Leo, but he's right about that. It truly is a waste of time and effort. We actually had a guy today who insisted that one of my co-workers call Americhoice right then and there and try to "get" them to pay for his root canal. She was unsuccessful, so he got on the phone with them and was arguing about what he's supposed to do when he's in agony. They told him that as long as he's got 8 points of contact (meaning existing upper lower teeth touching at 8 points in his mouth) they will not pay, he has to extract the tooth or pay for it out of pocket.

I totally agree with you that the wait is insane! There's not much we can do about it, as we do have to accomodate emergencies, plus he's double scheduled to allow for cancellations, but if you schedule a first app't of the day, you will be in and out.

They do, but Americhoice doesn't pay much more and Healthplus pays even less (try $7.25 for an exam) and there are plenty of people in Brooklyn who accept it.

cindy, I'm the second amother:
what's a molar root canal? I don't think it's one of the "double" teeth. is that what they consider molar teeth?
does americhoice pay for part of the root canal?
what are the 8 points of contact?
also, I need regular cavities so my dentist told me to do those first and meanwhile he will send in a request to the insurance to have the root canal done. he never told me that they will probably deny it, I just heard that from other people.
how long does it take to hear back from the insurance company if they agree or deny the request?

A molar is one of your back teeth with 3+ roots, the ones you chew with most #'s 14,15, 2,3,, 18,19(also #1,16, 17 and 32 but those are your wisdom teeth)

No, for children they'll pay for a pulpotomy, which is a baby rootcanal.

That means that you have at least 8 points in your mouth where upper and lower teeth touch each other, therefore allowing you to function normally, chew etc.

Again, depends what tooth you need the root canal on, they may approve it, especially if it's a front or premolar. It takes about 4 weeks to receive an answer from Americhoice.
