| This is so ironic. a relative of mine refused to name her son Isaac b/c what kind of name is that 4 a jewish boy, so she gave him the oh-so-jewish (NOT!) name of Isadore. meanwhile, Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Johnson, two African-American ladies of the non-Jewish faith, named their sons Hershel and Isaiah. Football fans will know who they are. |
My zeide, alav hashalom, came from a well known chasidish family and was in yeshiva though his thirties in an era where that was very uncommon. He was Yitzchak in Hebrew, Isidore in English, as Isidore was a common English substitute for Yitzchak in those days. It's just the same as every Sorohle being Sadie, or every Miriam being a Mildred. It's actually quite a Jewish name in that sense.
My husband has heard of Hershel Walker and Isaiah Johnson. But no Jewish boys go by Isaiah - they go by Yeshaya or Shai or whatever.

Nicknames that are kavua merosh are missing the point. |

when I think Abby I think of someone modern orthodox.
WOULD you call your daughter Rochel- Ray-chel as louche said?
because its the same idea.
its like an english version of the name.
I know some people who put their kids names on their birth certificates in the anglicized version.
like Rachel, David, Joseph but actually called them by the more frum sounding names Rochel, Dovid, and Yosef
here it sounds like you will do the opposite.

We wanted a certain nickname for one of our daughters, and chose the appropriate full name in order to use the nickname! _________________ "...swung out toward the other bank with a kind of wild exhilaration and landed gently on his feet, taller and stronger and wiser in that mysterious land."

Horrified to hear Yiddish speakers are per se frummer than others. Dovid or Rochel has nothing frummer or more Jewish than David and Rachel (now, Dayvid and Raytshl are English forms). _________________

I see your point, kindof.
why is Abby modern orthodox, but Judy or Debbie is not. those are both shortened versions of anglicized names.
most of the abbys I know are not modern orthodox at all and come from FFB homes.
