sure pay someone for their advice ... or just get it from a friend, book, or website for free ...

and what would be the point if they don't have it together themselves - it means we are all lacking perfection - hence the human race ...

From what I understand, most coaches do their sessions over the phone and don't actually meet the person. A mashpiah is someone who knows you intimately and you have chosen for whatever connection or reason you have, to rely on for advice. A mashpiah doesn't claim to be trained, just to be a human being who has time for you. Also, a mashpiah is someone who you approach for advice on different things that arise in your life, not only someone who you work with to solve an ongoing issue.

Some life coaches are good, but not because of their training, which is minimal. They are just good at helping others. Of course you have people who have lots of training and are psychologists who are no good either. But life coaching has more people who don't know what they are doing because the rules for declaring yourself a life coach are pretty weak. I originally planned on becoming a therapist and did my undergrad degree in psychology, but then decided against it as the field has so much baloney and fuzzy science in it and I didn't think I would be good at it. You have to be careful no matter who you go to and no matter what they call themselves.

Not sure if this thread is still active...
I just trained in it on top of my Masters degree in counseling. It is really fascinating because it draws on your strengths and gives you the opportunity to draw upon your intuition in creating a more satisfying life, based on what you as the client want.
I am interested in sharing this skill with the frume community and especially Jewish mothers to help them create a more positive experience than I had...
