a cappella literally means "as in chapel." it comes from before the christians allowed musical instruments to be played on the sabbath. it generally does involve multiple harmonies. I'll see if I can find some true jewish a cappella to post on this site, it is absolutely beautiful.

thanks for that explanation. I actually belong to a singing group and we have many acapella songs that we do but it always has 7 harmonies. I guess the music in this clip was just an addition which beautifies it some more.

at 1:20 you can hear it, all 7 harmonies. You can hear every note hit within the octave. It's that spine tingling moment, when acapella makes the hairs on your arms stand up.

the thing about good a cappella is that instrumentation detracts from it.
so what singing group is this? I'd love to join one, as long as it lives up to my musical snobbishness. I admit I'm a big music snob.

Re: women's choir... can it be informal, just experimenting with different harmonies and then rehearse it weekly until it's pitch perfect? That's my specific enjoyment. I have a very soft low voice which contributes nothing to a choir, so it's all for my own enjoyment, not for others to hear.

monday night at 9?
I'd love to experiment, but I need to be over this cough first. soft low voices absolutely contribute to a choir, btw. who do you think does the soft low harmonies?
I took a choir class in high school and would love to do something like that. I'd need a good conductor, though. I don't sight read.

I don't either sight read for singing but I make up my own stuff, that's the fun! I also have perfect pitch, so you can't fool me with an off note.
can't say I have perfect pitch, but I have a good range, and with practice I think I'm pretty good. right now I tend to go froggy on the higher notes. I actually would like to learn real pieces, though. it's so cool. we'd need at least three people, though.
