can anyone tell me what would get me the best bargain for my money?
I'm looking for one of those sets that stand in a block of wood. anything up to $100 would be fine, but I don't want to get stuck with a set that doesn't cut well.

you need to really go see the set yourself. you will want:
a knife sharpener
a paring knife
a bread knife
a cleaver
a really large knife that looks really dangerous (can't think of the specific name here...)
a kitchen shear
possibly a fish-gutting knife (mine is great for carving turkey)
and possibly a set of steak knives.
make sure the blades don't bend. bad ones bend as you cut. not good at all.
my set is tools of the trade. I love it. it's very nice. my sil has one from the same company and hates it. go figure. so I can't recommend this specific brand. good luck finding one.

Ginsu! The ginsu knife set is amazing and it has everything you need plus 6 steak knives. Not really bargin but when compared to other sets its price is reasonable. I have this set: http://www.genuineginsu.com/Products/Kotta/04827/04827.html
It wasn't expensive like around 50 dollars I got it from Ginnys a mail order catalog I absolutely adore it!

Also I'd like to add:
Do not wash these knives in your dishwasher, it will develop rust spots on the bladel, it stays sharp but for cosmetic reasons I wash them by hand

and don't worry, a dishwasher won't be a problem since I don't actually own one lol
