How does one go about night training their kids?

What I did:
Limit fluids to just water after 5 PM. It's amazing how much less he drinks when it's just water -- he'll only drink to thirst instead of drinking for fun (milk).
Bathroom right before bed.
Bathroom right before we go to bed.
Dry till morning.
But he's much older and able to hold in a lot more than someone half his age, I assume. It's also hard to get them to be willing to go in the middle of the night (we did a chart for that).

This might sound a little gross to people, but my kids were still sleeping in my bed when I night trained them. I just let them sleep in underwear and dealt with the consequences. Of course, I made sure they went before going to sleep at night. If they started to wake up or toss and turn and I thought they might need to go, I would offer them the chance to go to the toilet. If they peed the bed, I had to take them out of the bed while I cleaned things up. I used a full mattress pad to protect the mattress and a smaller one I could take out so I didn't have to change the sheets every time, but it still woke us up temporarily. That wasn't really fun for either of us, but they quickly got the idea that it is better to just wake up and go rather than sleep through it. I got peed on a few times, but it didn't take too long.

Remember, that night training kind of happens on its own. So if a child is still waking up wet, even with all the tips listed, then the child's muscles are just not ready yet for staying dry at night.

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm also looking for advice. My dd has been potty-trained for over a year during the day, but she still wears a pull-up at night. She is a deep sleeper, and when she wakes up in the morning her pull-up is always at least a little wet. How old are children when they usually start sleeping in underwear? Any advice for what to do about my dd?

I would wake up my ds b4 I went to sleep, around 10 pm, and take him to the bathroom. he never gave me a hard time. He would go right back to sleep after. He always peed. When I forgot to take him he would wet his bed.
I did this for about 3 or 4 months, and then stopped.After I stopped, he woke up on his own around 4 or 5 am to go for about a month or so, and then slept till the morning dry.

Its amazing what little kids can do at night. We used to take turns and walk the kids in their sleep to the bathroom before we went to bed and sat them on the toilet and told them to make ..then walk them back and put them back in bed. If one of us go got up during the night then we would repeat the same thing. it worked ....

I'm having the same issue with DD. She's 4, been potty trained since she was 3 and still wakes up with a soaked pull up in the morning (if not before!) We tried taking her to the bathroom in the middle of the night but it just wasn't working. She pees A LOT. I tried taking away the liquids at night, but she says she's thirsty. I can't deny her water, especially in the summer! She doesn't drink juices she just likes water.

I don't really have any advice, except that eventually they'll get it. But I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone.

I don't know... I don't see a reason to night train a kid who's this young. My son just turned five and I'm not starting yet. I think kids need their sleep and it's not right to wake a child up. I have read that people just put their kids in underwear and don't revert to pull ups even when it clearly doesn't work just because... I don't know. Because what? Is there a reason a child should be forced to get up in middle of the night? I think I'm going to wait till my son gets it himself.

I agree with gamzu. I never pushed it with my kids. My oldest is 6.5 and he still has accidents. WE have been working on it but I don't really push it and I won't wake him at night. My daughter is 3.5 and she is not at all toilet trained and I am not going to push it until she seems to be ready.

I do think day is different than night, and I would push a little beyond the child's own schedule for daytime training. But when it comes to sleep, what is the trade off? What is the benefit?

I agree with gamzu and picklelady if you are waking the kid in middle of the night for them to pee then they are NOT toilet trained for the night

toilet trained for the night meens the kid will hold it in or wake up on there own

every one of my kids toilet trained for the night at different ages and did it on there own

I have a son that just turned 6 he is begging me to sleep in underware and as much as he would love to wake up dry he can't.

When I woke up my ds1 to take him at night, (he was about 3.5 at the time, and had been day trained for almost a year) I would carry him to and from the bathroom. He would fall right back asleep (eventhough he's a light sleeper). I did this just once around 10 pm, and then he stayed dry until the morning. And he didn't remember anything in the morning. I don't feel it effected his sleep.
He really wanted the independence of not wearing a diaper at night. He felt so big.
After about 3 months of doing this, I stopped, and since then he's been dry EVERY night.

Now the party starts for my next ds! He's been begging me for about 3 months already - he doesn't want to wear a diaper anymore, so I told him we'll try it out, and warned him, that I would be waking him up at night to take him. He's very excited!
If I see that he can't stay dry from then until the morning, then I will wait another few months.

we have to take DS around 10 to the bathroom, becauseif we dont then he soaks through his nitetime pull up by the AM - and hats with limiting fluids

We waited until they woke up almost every day with a dry diaper/pull-up, then put a star on the calendar each day that they were dry in the morning, sometimes with a small prize. When there were something like 7 or 10 in a row we let them try underwear. For the 1st one this worked really well. I think it took about a month. We are now doing it for the 2nd and its going pretty well so far.

I never woke up either of my boys to go to the bathroom during the night, I felt if we had to do that then they werent ready for it.

just a note:
my 3 year old has been night trained for at least 3 months at this point and in that time he had 3 accidents. And I figured out why. I put him to bed in PJs WITHOUT underwear. When he wears underwear he has accidents.

I think its similar to the day training I had with my first. He felt his underware was similar to diapers. When he wore nothing or boxers he was fine.
