I live in boro park, and I had a phone recertification a few months ago. it was pretty simple, you mailed back your documents before the appointment date, and at the phone recertification they just confirm everything for example: they confirm your people in household, income, rent.... it only took a few minutes.
but they were running very late. I called them and told them that I can't wait any longer bec I needed to pick up my child from school, so they said I can give them my cell phone number and they can call me back on my cell phone when they are ready. the whole call took about 5 minutes.

And the reason for the phone interviews is probaby because they do the following: yoi mail your response with your phone numbers and they claim they didn't get it, and since you didn't recertify theuy close your case, they have done it to many in brooklyn

I called to see if I qualify and I live in Lakewood and they told me that you can't have $2,000 in savings whether it be bonds, stocks or in a bank account. Are you all telling me that every month you have less than $2,000 in all of your accounts combined? Or are people hiding their money somewhere?

When we were on food stamps we were fortunate if we had $200 in our account at any given time. If you have 2,000$ that you don't currently need you don't need food stamps.

ALL of your accounts? Poor people who need food stamps don't need multimple empty accounts.

If amother has $2000 and you have $200 it doesnt make a difference. If you qualify, you qualify. Maybe she has 10 kids and 10 tuitions and you have 2? . I personally know of someone who had multiple accounts and tons of money and her husband lost his job. They are living off the savings and accounts she was smart enough to create (not like some people who stick all their income into "cash G'machs" so it makes them eligible for all these benfits when in fact if they would open accounts like they should, they would be ineligible)
Now her husbands income is just his unemployment. So they qualify and they have tons of Savings and accounts. So maybe now, you'll understand and youll fell better about the whole situation as you sound very aggravated.

Its not called qualifying if you are hiding cash to do so. Its called lying, cheating and stealing. Do you think "cash gemachs" and opening new accounts to hide savings is Legal? It isn't. Its fraud.

I was merely responding to the amother who said that if you have multiple accounts, you dont need food stamps. My point was- Did you ever wonder why some of these people dont have multiple accounts?

Just because someone DOES have multiple accounts, that is no reason to say that DONT need food stamps as the amother above said. These people might be legal and on the books opposed to the crooks who "only" have one account and dont.

I don't get it. So you are assuming that amother who only has $200 must be hiding cash? Is cheating really that common? Are there not people who actually have so little money who get food stamps?

Lets just say this- I take calls for a certain organization which deals with all these social programs. I cannot begin to tell you what is going on out there. I have been personally told that there are Gmachs for the sole purposes of "hiding and depositing money" so that it is not in the bank and can be accounted for. For food stamps, in many states, the law of assests being taken into account has been taken away so thats easy- but for medicaid- every single account you have CD's ,Checking, 401K Life insurance- all these things are taken into account. If the money is underground- then no one is gonna know about it.

The reason I responded to that amother is because she seems to think that if someone has more than one bank account or more than 200 dollars, they shouldnt get food stamps- Well guess what- some but not all of these people have 200 dollars and 1 account for a VERY good reason. And just because someone has 2000 dollars she implied THEY shouldnt be eligible. How does she know???

Wasn't she responding to a post where the person said with 2000 dollar savings they didn't qualify, wondering how people had less than that?

Yes, she quotes an amother who says she called and didn't qualify because of 2000 in savings. Just look at the post.

You quote by hitting the button that says "quote".

Amother above me- how could you not qualify? Isn't that the point of foodstamps- for people without money?

We don't qualify because we make "too much money" according to their calculations. The trouble is that we have credit card debt, so by the time we finish paying the minimum monthly payments, there isn't enough for rent, food, tuition.

I'm the amother who wrote that I can't qualify because I have over $2,000 in the bank. That is not much, tuition, food, rent, utilities, car payments that all adds up to way more than $2,000. I'm wondering if anyone here in Lakewood is on food stamps and what do they do to get on? I'm not into hiding money or anything like that.

You could easily not qualify if you earn more than a certain amount of money. It doesn't really matter what your expenses are, or if they eat that entire amount that you take home leaving you no money in the bank.

reviving an old thread...
have my first food stamps appt on monday, we can really use it, I am wondering if anyone knows:
How much can you make to get the max amount for a family of 4 in New Jersey. What is the max they will give?
Also, if I miraculously get on, will they give me a card right away?
Can I use it for any food aside for paper goods etc?

Some of us, yes, we have less than $2000 in all our accounts combined. Times are rough and that's why we are on government aid.
