Second, I think your menu is awesome. My dil to be got challah, salad, soup, chicken, rice and cake as her meal at our house the first time and so does anyone else who comes...
Third, I don't know what happens in your neck of the woods but where I live women don't eat in public. They pick at the food to look thin. Even if they weigh 200 lbs. Everyone picks except me because I'm past it all. So when I once had to decide how many chickens and how much rice to cook for 15 people I forgot that 9 of them were females and we ended up eating leftovers for a week until we gave the rest on Friday a week later to one of the neighbors' dogs for his "lekoved shabbos" (LOL!).
So while the choices are, as I wrote, awesome, remember to check quantities unless you intend to give the guests doggie bags to take home on Motzaei shabbos! |
Thanks. You're 100% right about female eating habits, but in this case, other than the new kallah, everyone else has been in the family for a while so I have pretty good idea how much will be eaten (in fact, most of my kids ask me to give them the quantities to make for bigger crowds as I've learned it quite well while they always tend to overdo it). I've even got 2 DILs (both then, one well under 100 lbs.) who can match the best of the men in eating!
I still expect some leftovers, it is inevitable with a large crowd and a diverse menu, but it shouldn't be too bad, and I've also got a few good leftover eaters.
Now that I've also done about all of the cooking that can be done in advance (conveniently I'm not making Shavuos -- going to my kids), I'm starting to get excited.

This Shabbos was the big event, and everything was great. After discussing menu with some DDs and DILs we wound up adding a small roasted turkey breast and a lettuce salad for Shabbos lunch. Everyone very much appreciated the diversity of the dishes served. I do have leftovers (mainly kugels from Friday night and some roast and corned beef) not nearly as much as I'd feared.
I'd also prepared quite a bit of baked items (cakes and cookies) and lots of cut up fruit which were both served for desserts and left available all afternoon, and were all finished by the time Shabbos was over.
Thank you everyone for all your help and advice.
