Thank You everyone for your help. I am really looking forward to starting the feedings in the next 2-3 weeks (although I fell like I need to start today!! My daughter is always hungry!). I will definitely keep you all posted as we go along. Seems like I gotta start with one fruit and veggie at a time so that should be fun.

Thanks again!

im not so clever as to make and freeze Embarassed

I boil and mash as I go and ive never bought a jar (for either dd or ds) - I try to make sure its not too smooth either so that way they are used to lumps in their food!!!!!

btw I happen to loooove the chicken mixture I make - I end up eating it too Embarassed so I make alot of that Laughing

What everyone else said...except:

DO NOT PUT BABY FOOD IN THE MICROWAVE! Microwaves heat unevenly (hence the need for rotating plates in most of them) and you don't want to burn the baby's mouth! Defrost & heat by placing in a large bowl of boiling water (just like you would do for a bottle of formula or frozen EBM).

just a tip: you should steam the vegies and fruits before mashing them. if you boil them, they lose their nutrients.

It cooks the vegetables first.

Interesting. But I totally can't justify the price of it.

How much effort is it to boil a pot of stuff and grind it up?

I make a large pot every other week
3 chicken bottoms, 2 large carrots, large zuccini
sweet potato
celery potato

Boil for an hour

Then I grind in small portions
One will be carrots and chicken
Zuccini/pot
Chicken soup with all veggies
Sweet pot/chicken
sweet potato plain

This gives my son variety.

Start with one vegetable/fruit at a time, so if there is a reaction, you'll know what caused it. (boil each one in a clean pot with fresh water so there is no cross contamination.

Also Use chicken bottoms, babies need the fat, and they are moister, breasts are too dry for them.

Sometimes I just take supper and use the hand blender to grind up what we ate that night,(as long as I know the baby is good with all the ingredients used.)

Breastfed babies are used to flavor, breast milk takes on the taste of the mothers food. Don't make things too spicy, but they do not need to be bland either.

most veg need a little bit of water (or other suitable liquid) when mashed (or blended) to make the right consistency for a 6 month old who is just starting to wean. so if you do boil, use the water from the cooking that has most of the nutrients that get lost.

at the very first stages, you're more concerned to encourage the child to like lots of different tastes and also to check for allergies.

ps - don't give babies honey if they are less than 12 months, their digestive system can't handle it.

I never made special baby food ... just mashed up real food ... babies need a little spice in their life too ... try your own chicken soup with it's veggies ... a sweet potatoe, anything that is soft ... besides a new baby might stick to mushy bananas at first and rice cereal ...

That's what we did too. I've never cooked anything special for the baby, just mushed up something-or-other from dinner. They also got things that I bought mashed anyway (like pumpkin puree and applesauce). Simple things like mashed fruit can cost 4x what the same fruit costs in the produce section. Also, not a single one of my babies would ever eat that rice cereal mush. Smile It's really no trouble to mash up food for them. And it's much cheaper!

I used jars first only to test for allergies as they run in the family. My daughter never liked them she was much happier when I took soup veggies and mashed with a fork , a hand blender or mini food processor and what she really loved was when I made chicken with squash, sweet pot, carrot onion garlic potatoes and the like and mashed it up so it had roast chicken and spice taste we discovered if her food had spice taste she ate. Not all babies likeit bland I am not saying to us salt or sugar but naturals like garlic onion, herbs or even a drop of spices will not hurt. Many kids like the taste of food. Best storage idea was to freeze in ice cube tray and than pop into containers or baggies and thaw in fridge or counter or in micro for 20 seconds or so as didn't want to overheat and burn babies mouth.

I've just found these two recipies that my baby likes but he is used to solid foods, I puree them both up.

chicken wing, 8 grapes deseeded and skin off and 1 courgette boil all together for about an hour, puree and make up with baby rice when serving. Yehuda gulped this one down

The next one is 1 leek, and 1tablespoon of sunflower oil, brown them off and add to 4 oz meat, 10oz sweet potato peeled and cubed and 300 ml of water plus juice of one orange. Place in oven for 1 and a quarter hours then puree.

This is for when your baby is used to different flavours.

I cook everything for my baby, I only use jars in an emergency.
I cook separately for her because I cook with salt, and that's not healthy for babies.

I also have the Babycook machine, and I also love it. It's the most used applience in my home!
Otherwise, a hand blender works just as well.

And I also have a book with great tips and recipes: Super Baby Food.
