No it is not a joke. It is a great job, with fabulous benefits and with good promotional opportunities.
It might not be for everyone, but their is a growing number of frum people working there, mostly men, but not exclusively. Not all Jews are cut out to be a doctor or Rebbi.
You do not need a college degree, it may not be for you, but perhaps you may know someone who is interested.
The test is only given once every five years and people are hired from that list for the next five years. BTW, you don't have to be 18 to take the test, you must only be 18 to be hired.

So those are the people who are securing the courts for us... Reminds me of the job offers prisoners have waiting for them when released from prison: flipping burgers, or security officers. of all the irony...

The pay is just under 40k, not exactly a great opportunity in my opinion.

I was just on jury duty & I was thinking about it. I was on a pretty lame case, but must be tough when you have those bad cases & people act out in court.

I have been working in the Courts for the last 20 years and would like to make a few points of clarification.
First, Court Officers are the uniformed employees who keep order in the Courtroom and the Courthouse. They carry a gun and must pass a physical before being hired.
It is an entry level job, and most officers take promotional tests to become a court clerk.
As a court clerk, you can have many different and varied responsibilities, primarily you work in the Courtroom and supervise the officers, court reporter and other court staff.
As to the benefits, I will try to list a few of them. You start off with four weeks vacation, it increases up to 27 days. 13 sick days per year.
Great insurance, glasses every year, great dental (I felt bad that only four of my kids needed braces Wink

)
If C'V you need to go to Sloan Kettering or other 'Center of Excellence' through the USA, you have no co-pay, deductibles, and more benefits, such as travel expenses.
Promotions are by test,
You get up to 2 years (unpaid) leave after each kid, where they save your job for you, so my DD who has five kids under age eight, can technically be on maternity leave as long as she has a kid once every two years.
It is a stress free job. One Court Officer I know, was able to learn Shas while on the job.
Great pension.
They hire for five years, so even if you are not looking right now, it may pay to take the test.
You do not have to be 18 to take the test, just to get hires. My kids took in during high school.
Not all kids are college material, this might be great for someone you know.

Yes, you can apply even if you are not a citizen (or 18 yet), as long as you become a citizen by the time you are hired,
The test generates a list that is used to hire people over the next five years. So as long as they become a citizen before then they should take. If they are called for the job, before they meet the qualifications, they can defer their appt until they fill it.

I just want to add that one of my DDs took the Court Officer test when she was 13 and passed. When she was called for the job (at age 18 ) she chose not to take the job, but she did take the test again. She scored one of the top scores, but kept deferring taking the job because she was living in Israel. She is back now and will take the test again, because maybe sometime during the next five years she will want to work for the Courts.
