Because they're stupid. They probably started doing it b/c they thought it was cool and now they're addicted.

they look about my sons age 18ish ... they forgot there's a jew on this block (last one) but I also thought why hide it ... especially cause you can't get the smoke smell out ... they looked up at me ... I've seen worse so ... too bad my son wasn't here ... I'm curious who they were ... yeah why start ... that is werein it all lies ... cause then you're addicted ... my dd started smoking ... but I was told by professionals it was the better of the evils she was trying to stay away from ... so I just believed them ... now she's good mostly ... hard work though ... then she stops and starts ... or starts something worse ... with these guys though it is just shear stupidity ...

My brother used to come home from kollel all the time when he was single and awaiting a shidduch. It was always his ‘chavrusah’ who smoked like a chimney. 15 years later, he barely gave it up last year. So when I got married and dh stank 3 days later, I asked him ‘your chavrusah smokes too” ? so he said, how do you know! So I told him, my brother’s also… and that’s it. still hasn’t cracked it though he’s down to 3 a day. Too bad I have a nose like a bloodhound, nothing gets past me, not even my daughters pooop from the other end of the house!

ditto.
I've heard some yeshivos banned smoking but others allow or even encourage it "for concentration". Rolling Eyes
If they're so stressed out (and I wonder why), can't they find something else to feel better??

What is it about Yeshiva guys smoking? I think my son started smoking in yeshiva in Israel. How do I get him to stop without "nagging" him?

I consider myself very lucky that ds only picked up the caffeine habit in yeshiva in EY, b/c ppl warned me that many boys start smoking. The hours are so long and they want to stay alert. No one wants to be the first bochur to leave the BM to go to sleep. They teach them plenty of gemara but precious little Rambam, especially not the Shvil Hazahav philosophy and the part about taking care of your health.

B"H ds is a cautious kind of guy and treats coffee like a drug, which it is: used in moderation, only when really necessary, not all the time. I like to think he got this from me, but it's probably just the way he's made.

Yea, and I forgot to mention that besides smoking, my son also picked up the caffeine habit in Israel. He's constantly with the coffee and cigarettes. It's a shame that yeshivas don't teach these boys about health.

I hate the idea how in many yeshivos smoking is acceptable. in seminary, we actually brought up this topic with one of our rebbeim, he said the same thing louche said, it is to keep up their concentration and it also acts as a stress reliever. since many yeshivos dont encourage playing sports as an outlet (which is HEALTHY, btw) they let them smoke, which causes lifetime addiction and blackened lungs. how in the world can they justify this?????????????

When we were dating, I asked DH straight out.
He said that he has one every once in a while.
I am very sensitive to any smelll, and will pick it up, even if he's been sitting near someone who does.
But as he said he is def. a "social smoker".
He could be standing with a group of friends and not be tempted.
Sometimes, when were driving far together, and I see he's really tired, Ill tell him he can treat himself to one.
He's fine with that.

I've also noticed that an important factor is that a lot of them dont even know the health risks. Even my uncle, who used to be a doctor, would not tell his sons how dangerous it is, after I told them it's really bad for your health. You could see he knows it is, but kinda ignored the question, since it is so excepted.
Interestingly enough, in the hesder world it isnt excepted at all and here in yeshive you wont see anyone smoking, ever!

omg - is that why they ignore the smoking ?!?!?! Shocked
they should go on a health trip to the morgue and look at the charcoal blackened lungs that look as if they had been on a grill ... Idea (I saw a program on tv where they did this with a group of kids who smoked)

I don't understand why sports is so taboo ... they play in elementary school - enough people listen to the games at least on the radio ... it's so much less bitul than smoking ... Confused

Maybe because they can smoke and learn at the same time but not play sports and learn at the same time? But you'd think that cutting your life span in half is even more bitul!! Sad

A family member was very into a shidduch but dropped it when the boy was seen smoking. In my family it is UNACCEPTABLE. (B"H they all keep to the rule)
