Counting, checking, rechecking, serializing, compartmentalizing, tracking, inspecting, doing things in order, toeing the line, mutars and assurs.
Is this enough to make a sane person OCD?
We just finished Pesach cleaning and are now counting down to Shavuot. In the meantime we have mini count-downs going on for TM. Etc.
Is all this religious order what keeps it together?

I don't find it "OCD" inspiring at all. Only Pesach LOL.

Judaism is not OCD. Some people, who have issues, "project" them on Judaism. If they were frei, then it would be bio eating, cleanliness, or compulsive politics reading...

My sentiments exactly.
If you were to research OCD, you would see just how prevalent it is in the non-Jewish, non-Frum world.
OCD often manifests itself into Torah observance, in observant Jews who are already OCD.

It's hard to reconcile your emoticon with that stern look on your face in your avatar.

I dont really understand. I agree with ruchel. If you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, you might use Judaism as an "outlet" for it. Just like anything else in life. Chas veshalom is our relgion something that revolves around doing things by rote and in an order Sad so sad that peole think that way.

I think I have had a bit of ocd when it comes to this. but I wondered if it just wasn't knowing the halachos well enough because as I learn more I do get less nervous. Anyways I think that if a person really has ocd it can manifest itself in anything wether or not the person is religous or jewish. I wonder though how it feels to have non halacha related ocd - like what exactly is one afraid of?

An 8 year old in camp with tremendous fear because he imagines his nephew falling through the cracks of the portch gate in his home, because he, the 8 year old, is not there to save him.
A teenager washing his hands over and over again until his hands are chapped and bloody.
A Chosson afraid that his Kallah will leave him.
A newly married man afraid that he will be a failure in marriage, and that his wife will divorce him.
A man checking the door locks over and over each night.
All true examples from real life people.

my mom has ocd. it isnt really a fear of what will happen just a compulsion that it must be done. not doing it is like trying to not scratch a very itchy itch. yes,in severe cases the need to do it feels like a physical need.
She must open every piece of mail- all the junk and catalogs- that comes into her house every day. this takes over 2 hours a day.
As a child I was not allowed to put away my own toys because I would not "do it right" each barbie had to be dressed, with her hair brushed and laying flat layed in the box, in her section.
my ponytails could have no bumps at all, this took ages and was painful
her sandwhiches are always made the exact same way
most recently I asked her to look at the new pics id put up online and call me back over an hour later she still hadn't done so. I called her. she HAD to sort through and delete all her junk emails once she opened up the computer.
I love her! but it hurts. I hate watching her waste her life opening junk mail.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds tough! Maybe someone can sneak to her mailbox and throw everything out before she gets it. I guess in my case my problem is recurring thoughts and needing a lot of reassurance that im doing the right thing , not so much compulsive actions.

The religion is a religion, nothing more. Religion is, among other things, a way of making sense out of the world and keeping one's life in order.

Order in and of itself is healthy, not pathological. However, observant judaism does have a decided appeal to the obsessive-compulsive. Being an observant jew does not make you obsessive-compulsive, but if you are obsessive compulsive you can easily make yourself very much at home as an observant jew and then "justify" your aberrations as a manifestation of religious zeal.

That being said, I imagine many organized religions have ritual elements that would appeal to the obsessive-compulsive. That's what obsessive-compulsive disorder is all about--making sense of the world through ritualistic repetition.

Yeah, he even invented Lincoln Logs... see, that proves how fun he is!

(P.S. check out Uhura's punim... she looks pretty serious, too. she's probably busy intercepting an important message from the Romulans!)
