| They put it on the molars. The child has to be old enough not to swallow the sealant. They are the best invention.

| Sealants are put on the chewing surface of childrens molars - on their permanent teeth. It is done during a regular visit, after cleaning. I don't think there is anything they can swallow. It was painted on, sort of like nail polish & then hardened using a colored light (infrared maybe?? - I dont know the technical details, thats just what I watched). Nonu of my children have had any cavities since we applied the sealants. At each visit I ask if they are still there or if they need to be reapplied - never needed to. They are almost transparent, a bit milky colored. You can only notice them if you are looking for them.

I think its called "itum shinayim". when dd was 5 and ds was 3.5 they both had a few cavities. $$$. my dentist recommended to seal the rest of the teeth.(yes, baby teeth) it cost 125NIS/tooth (I think - this is a few years ago) but it was cheaper than getting a filling for the cavities (I think 250/tooth??) AND - my kids havent had any more cavities since (B"H 2 years later)
I know ppl who had it done with kupah dentists for about half the price, but I prefer my private dentist. (and if you have macabi mushlam or meuchedet see, it should be free)
ALSO, my dd who is now in first grade came home with a letter that iriyat yerushalayim was doing free sealings for all the 1st and 2nd graders in her school! they had a dentist come in for a few days to do the work. she had grown two more molars since I had her other teeth done so I had the school dentist seal those teeth. I can see a difference in the work between my dentist (much more professional) and the school one. but these are all baby teeth anyway.
